' Specification of Letters Patent. ,Patented $61917. 10,1912."
Application filed July 17, 1911. Seria1 No 638,922..
To all whom z'tmay concern Be it known that I, J on W'. BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gomez, in the county of Terry, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to curry combs and the object of the invention is to provide a comb in which the teeth are automatically presented for action when pressure is exerted upon the device in the currying operation and in which a movable plate is automatically actuated to clean the teeth when pressure is removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to form the back and movable cleaning plate in connection with the other parts of the comb in a novel manner, the parts being simple in sltructure and therefore economical to prouce.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of my improved curry comb. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44: of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown my improved curry comb which comprises a back plate 5 constructed of sheet metal and having its forward end bent downwardly as shown at 6, the lower end of the downturned portion 6 being formed with teeth 7. A pair of U-shaped plates 8 and 9 are secured transversely of the lower face of the back as shown at 10 by rivets or equivalent means and said plates have their extremities also provided with teeth 7 in a similar manner as the downturned portions 6 at the forward end of the back.
The rear portion of the back is turned downwardly as shown at 11 and is provided with an upturned portion 12 for pivotally connecting a wire link 13 thereto. A movable cleaner plate 1% is provided with a series of slots 15 disposed in parallel relation and spaced apart for receiving. the
toothed portions of the plates 8 and 9 andthe downturned portions 6 while said cleaner plate is further providedwith an upturned forward portion 16'to prevent displacement of the cleaner plate. The rear edge of the cleanerplate is provided. with a turned por tion 17 for pivotal connection with the opposite side of the link 13 relative to its point of attachment to the upturned portion 12 of the downwardly extending rear end 11 and the latter portion terminates above the normal extended position of the cleaner plate so that the link is disposed in an inclined position.
Pins 18 extend through the back and cleaner plate at spaced distances from each other adjacent to the front and rear portions 'of the plates and are secured to the back plate for the mounting of coiled springs 19 thereon and between the said plates for exerting outward pressure upon the-cleaner plate to hold the same beyond the teeth and by reason of the link connection 13, free movement of the latter plate is permitted and the cleaning of the teeth thus insured. A handle 20 is attached to the back by means of a shank 21 having integral attachingextensions 22 suitably secured in position by the rivets 10 which secure the Ushaped' plates 8 and 9 to the back plate.
In the operation of the device, the pressure exerted upon the cleaner plate in the currying operation will depress the same against the action of the coiled springs for movement by reason of its pivotal connection and the upturned portion 16 will prevent outward displacement of the plate when relieved of pressure, thus insuring of positive cleaning of the teeth.
The device can be cheaply constructed of sheet metal with the except-ion of the springs and connecting parts of the plate and will be found durable and efficient in use.
I claim 1. In a self-cleaning curry comb, a back plate, a handle secured thereto, U-shaped plates secured to the lower face of the back plate and formed with teeth, a cleaner plate pivotally connected at the rear edge of the back plate and having slots receiving said toothed plates, means normally holding said cleaner plate over the teeth and permitting the same to be depressed for action and an upturned portion at the forward end of the cleaner plate engaged with a downturned portion of the back plate to prevent displacement of the former.
2. A curry comb comprising a back plate having a downturned forward end provided with teeth, U-shaped plates secured to the lower face of the back plate and having toothed extremities, said back plate having a downturned rear end, a cleaner plate having slots receiving said toothed portions and an upturned forward portion preventing displacement thereof, a link pivotally connecting the rear end of the cleaner plate and 1 the rear downturned portion of the back plate, pins connected to the cleaner plate and movably engaging the back plate and springs mounted upon the pins to force said JOE W. BLACK.
