UNITED s ATn's PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HENRY FLECHSING, o rvro'ronm, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
CORSET-STAY;
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY.
FLEoHsING, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Victoria, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Stays; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in corset stays.
The object of the invention is to provide a corset stay having reinforcing means at the waistline where the greatest strain is exerted and at which point ordinary stays usually break or bend permanently out of shape.
Another object is to provide a corset stay reinforced at the waistline and so constructed that it will readily yield without breaking when the body of the wearer is bent at the waistline and which will assume its normal straight position when the pressure of the body thereon is relieved.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a side stay constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation thereof; Fig. 3 represents an edge view with the parts in the position which they assume when pressure is exerted on the inner face of the stay such as would be exerted by the bending of the body of the wearer at the waistline, the dottedlines of said figure showing the parts in normal position; Fig.
4: is a perspective view of one of the sections of the side stay shown in the figures. above described; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a pair of front corset stays showing this invention applied thereto.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1
to 4, the invention is shown applied to a metal side bone or stay of a corset and in Fig. 5 to a pair of front closing sta s, the invention being the same in all'the gures. Each stay is composed of upper and lower sections 1 and 2 hingedly connected at their,
inner or meeting ends. Each of the sections Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 10, 1912. Application filed ma 4, 1911.
Serial so; 624,961."
1 and 2 has a recess, as 3, formed in one side stay. The inner end wall of each of these recesses 8 is preferably rolled to form a hinge knuckle 4 for the reception of a pintle 5, the knuckles of the two sections being arranged transversely of the stay in alinement with each other to receive said pintle. The end of each section which extends be yond the knuckle thereof forms an extension 6. The extension of one section overlaps the outer faceof the adjacent section and forms a resilient reinforcing member for the section which it overlaps. The free end of each extension being slidable longitudinally on the section which it overlaps, when the stay is bent in the direction shown in full lines in Fig. 3, the free ends of the extensions resist the bending of the stay and tend to return the sections to their normal position, shown in dotted lines in said figure, when pressure is released.
The sections 1 and 2 are slit longitudinally at the base of the extensions 3 to provide for the operation of the hinge which connects the two sections and to permit said extensions 3 to bend gradually at this point when the stay is bent. The recesses 3 are arranged in opposite sides of the respective sections to provide for the disposition of the hinge knuckle of one section under the extension of the other section whereby when the parts are assembled these knuckles are arranged at the inner face of the stay and the resilient tongues or extensions 3 are arranged on its outer face, as shown clearly in the drawings.
In Fig. 5 two front closing stays 7 and 8 are shown whichare composed of hingedly connected "sect-ions constructed similarly to the side stays described above. Any suitable closing devices may be provided for these front stays, those here shown being in the form of hooks 9 carried by the stay 7 which are adapted to be engaged by catch members 10 carried by the stay 8.
'From the foregoing description, taken in -connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted-towithout departing from the principle or sacrificing any of theadvantages of the invention claimed. I claim as myvinvention:
A corset stay comprising two sections,
each having a recess in its inner side edge; and a tongue projecting into its recess, each .tongue having at its end a hinge knuckle,: "the two sections being laterally overlapped Copies of thispatent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the f Commissioner of Patents, Washington, 1).;0.
