STANISLAW WAWRZENIECKI, OF ELIZABETH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED-BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912.
Application filed April 20, 1911. Serial No. 622,224.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SrANIsLAw WAWRZE- NIECKI, a subjectof the Czar of Russia, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to feed bags for horses and mules, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a feed bag that can be easily suspended from a horses head whereby the'entire contents of the bag can be obtained by the horse.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a feed bag with novel breathing nozzles, which will prevent a horse from breathing or inhaling the dust, dirt or other matter contained within the feed of the bag.
A further object of the invention is to provide a feed bag that is simple, durable and highly efiicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a feed bag as applied to a horses head, Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the feed bag, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
A feed bag in accordance with this invention comprises a circular bottom plate 1 and secured to the periphery of said bottom plate are the lower edges of a bag or cylindrical casing 2, preferably made of canvas or other strong and durable material. The lower edges of the casing 2 are surrounded by a hoop 3 having a plurality of uprights 4 adapted to assist in maintaining the casing or bag 2 in a cylindrical form, these uprights preventing feed within the bag or casing from bulging the side walls of the same. The hoop 3 is retained in engagement with the circular bottom plate 1 by screws 5 or other fastening means.
Mounted centrally of the circular plate 1 is the lower convolution 6 of a coiled compression spring 7, the upper convolution 8 of said spring being connected to a feed plate 9 having a peripheral flange 10 extending above and below said feed plate. The feed plate is of a diameter equivalent to the di ameter of the bag or casing 2, and this plate is adapted to support the feed placed within the bag and gradually feed the same upwardly into the upper part of the bag, as the feed is consumed by a horse.
The bag or casing 2 is provided with two openings 11, adjacent to the upper end thereof, and mounted in these openings are nozzles or tapering conduits 12 adapted to extend into the nostrils of a horses nose 13, whereby the horse can breathe fresh air without obtaining any of the dust or dirt within the bag or casing 2. Each nozzle is preferably made of a single volute helix spring 14 supporting a casing 15 made of canvas or other durable material.
The feed bag can be suspended from the horses head by an ordinary rope or strap 16 having the ends thereof attached to the upper edges of the bag or casing 2, as at 17.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a sanitary feed bag for horses that will prevent a horse from inhaling the dust and dirt generally found in oats, corn and other feed, and it is apparent that considerable feed can be saved as it is unnecessary for the horse to shake the bag to obtain the feed atthe bottom thereof; the spring pressed feed plate 9 gradually placing the feed in position to be entirely consumed by the horse.
What I claim is A feed bag comprising a circular disk constituting a base, a flexible casing inclosing said disk and secured thereto, said casing provided with a pair of openings near its upper end, a coiled spring having its lower end bent at an angle and fixed in said disk centrally thereof, a feed plate havsprings mounted in said nozzles and yield- 10 ing an upwardly and downwardly dependingly maintaining them extended.
