To. all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS B. PRAHAR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Massapeqiua, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Jaws, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in bag jaws and more particularly to that type in which there is an ornamented or decorated plate secured to the side of the jaw toimprove the appearance of the bag or to protect the upper edge of the bag body.

The object of my invention is to soform the plate that it may be very quickly and easily secured to the side of the jaw' without the aid oil solder, rivets or' other special fastening means.

My improved plate is so constructed that it is held in direct contact with the side of the jaw and without any intermediate spacing means. The plate itself carries a clip or fastener adapted to grip or clamp the jaw from the inner surface thereof and so formed that it is automatically locked in place upon assembling of the bag body and bag jaw.

By means of my invention bag jawsmay be kept in stock without ornamentation and plated with gold, silver or nickel or surface finished in any other suitable manner. Or-

namental plates of innumerable difi'zerent designs, shapes, sizes or of various different characters may be kept in stock and assembled with the jaws upon receiving each individual order. The assembling does not require any tools or any fastening devices and may be very quickly and easily accomplished. By so forming the ornamental plates, it is not necessary for the manufacturer to carry such large stock and the loss of bag jaws by the attachment to them of ornamentation which does not prove marketable is entirely eliminated.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bag jaw provided with an ornamental plate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an inside face view of the plate removed from the aw. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the bag body retaining the plate in position,

It is of course understood that my present invention is not limited to any pairj the plate. The plate has rigid therewith a clip 12 of sheet metal in the form of a strip, "one edge portion 13 of the strip being soldered, riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the rear surface of the plate and the other I edge portion 14 being spaced from the rear surface of the plate and substantially parallel thereto. The distance between this per-- 2 tion 14 and the surface of the plate is substantially equal to thethickness of the metal forming the jaw and serves to frictionally resiliently engage with the inner surface of the channel and hold the plate in place. The spaced portion 14k terminates in a l aterallly bent flange 15 adapted to extend across the channel adjacent to the inner surface of the web of the latter;

In the specific form illustrated I employ two separate clips 12 each extending lengthwise of the plate andflspaced apart but it is of course evident that only a single clip can be employed and extend the entire length or any suitable portion of the length of the plate. It is also evident that the clip could be formed integral with the plate in the form of a flange bent up from the lower edge of the plate. In Fig. 3 I have shown the flange 15 extending across the jaw channel but it is evident that this flange might have an extension 16 engaging with the opposite flange of the jaw as shown in Fig. 4 so as to form a groove or channel in the clip telescoping with the channel of the jaw. The clip or clips are so positioned on the plate that when the plate is forced to its limiting position the upper edge of the plate will have the proper relationship to the top surface of the jaw and the flange 15 will lie adjacent to the web of the channel. The. ends of the clip may if desired be so positioned as to engage with the end portions of the jaw and prevent endwise movement of. the plate. It will be noted that the clip serves not only to resiliently hold the plate but also serves as a means for insuring the proper positioning. The clip will hold the plate in place by its own resiliency during shipment or any ordinary handling of thejaw but the most important function of the clip is to insure the absolute locking of the plate in position upon the attachment of the bag body to the jaw.

The bag body 17 normally has a periph eral metal binding 18 which after sliding up into the channel of the jaw is secured in place by the ordinary rivets through the openings 19. This metal binding on the bag body comes into engagement with the inner surface of the flange 15 and positively prevents the clip from being pulled out of the channel. The body may be secured within the channel in any suitable manner as this constitutes no portion of my invention but it is important that the edge of the body serve to lock the clip in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with a bag jaw and a bag body secured thereto, of an ornamental plate having a clip extending into said jaws and locked in place solely by said bag body.

2. 5. The combination with a bag jaw substantially channel shaped in cross section, of an ornamenting plate in engagement with the outer surface of said jaw and having a clip rigidly secured to the rear surface of said plate below the edge of said jaw and projecting into said jaw and having a flange extending across said jaw adjacent to the inner surface of the web of the channel.

6. An'ornamental plate for use in connection with bag jaws having upon its rear surface a clip including a portion spaced from and substantially parallel to the rear surface of the plate and terminating in a flange substantially at right angles to the plane of the plate and substantially parallel to one edge of the plate.
