IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.

To all whom may concern Be'it known that we, J can F. COLLINS and Alt- THUR NEILL, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have'invcnt-ed a new and useful Improvement in Self-fastening Buttons; and do hereby 'declarethat the following is a full and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, of which- Figurel is a vertical section, showing our invention as applied to an article of wearing apparei.

This invention, relating to a novel improvement in self-fastening buttons, consists of a nearly'flatdisk, surmounted by a series of spring jaws, constituting the stem of the button, said spring jaws being passed through the wearing apparel in the first place, and next through a hole in the back of the buttoirhead, the said hole being smaller in diameter than the diameter of the expanded jaws, so that, when the spring jaws pass through the hole in the back of the button, they expand, thereby uniting the button-head to its stem, and firmly securing the article of wearingapparel between them','and the button receives the part of the garment to be buttoned on its head, instead of on the stern, as in ordinary cases.

' "lo detach our button from the garment on which it is thus fastened, is. simply to pass a loop of twist around the stem, between the cloth and buttonhead, and press the stem forward until the jaws g g are released from the projections ll-d, and nextdraw the loop tightly, when the jaws will-assume the form shown in fig. 4, and be released from the 'bntton head and cloth with ease and despatch.

\Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
