METAL FER/RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application filed February 25, 1911. Serial No. 610,962.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. TURNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Ferrules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to metal ferrules used to protect the ends of rods, sticks, pencils and other articles of manufacture, and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a metal ferrule or tip which can be easily and cheaply manufactured; second, to provicle a metal ferrule or tip which can be easily and quickly applied; third, to provide a metal ferrule or tip which will be self-retaining and will not require bolts, rivets or other separate means for securing it in position. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in wl1ich- Figure I is a plan view of my improved metal ferrule or tip; Fig. II is a cross section on the line ww of Fig. I; Fig. III is a plan view of a modification in which the ferrule or tip is shown in a cylindrical form and with the end open and extended to receive the rubber of a lead pencil or similar article; and Fig. IV is a cross section on the line m-m of. Fig. III.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The ferrule a is formed from a sheet metal'blank cut to the proper shape and stamped and folded so that a body part b and two opposite side webs b are formed, each side web I) having parallel inwardly extending longitudinal flanges 0 formed integral therewith and partly separated, on transverse lines at their inner ends, from the body part. The inner edges of the flanges 0 are bent inwardly substantially parallel to the web and the inturned edges of the flanges on one side of the webs being opposite to the inturned edges on the other side of the webs. One end of the ferrule is entirely open. The other end of the ferrule may be closed or may be open and shaped so as to admit" of the entrance of a rubber cushion, pen, knife-blade or other article.
The ferrule is designed for mounting upon the ends of sticks or rods used for rolling oilcloth, and is useful as a ferrule for fence posts, pickets, pike poles and wooden rods, sticks and similar articles of all kinds requiring a metal ferrule, either to protect the end of the stick or rod or to aid in securing some other article in the stick, rod or handle; also for securing rubbers to lead pencils, pens in penholders, and similar uses.
I claim A ferrule constructed from a sheet metal blank cut to the proper shape and stamped with a body part and two side webs folded and extending parallel from the body part, having their inner edges separated on transverse lines from the body part, and turned inwardly parallel with each other; the inturned edges of the flanges on one side of the webs being opposite to the inturned edges on the other side of the webs.
