To cll whom it may concern:
-Bc n hown that I, Acme-i some,
wnnrn, a citizen of the United Stzites, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and nsefol Roller Attachment for Washing-Ma chines and the Like, of which the following e specification,
- invention relates to roller attach to ments, for washing machines and the like,
its object being to provide means whereby,
one of the legs of the machine shifted so as to transfer its roller end-thus permit the machine to be moved readily from place to place. Another object is to provide novel means for the roller in active position relotive to the leg. Another object is to provide novel-means so for unlocking the roller to thus permit the leg to reassnnie its position in engagement with the surface on" which the machine is mounted. I
the foregoing and other view which appear as the proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts in v the details 6t construction hereinafter decnd claimed, it understood can be readily objects in so that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein can be .maide within the scope of what is claimed, withonc departing from the of the invention.
In the accompanying the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
soid drswings:-Figore l is a side elevzition of a washing machine having the present improvements combined therewith, the supporting roller shown out of opcrctive'position. Fig. 2 is a section on line AB Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the attachmentwith the ports in the positions shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4t is a: side elevation of the attachment with the roller in active position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view portly in section and partly in elevation of thelocking and unlocking mechanism.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 6 designetcs a. washing machine or the like two of the legs D of which are provided with casters of the usual or any preferred construction. Brackets 1 are secored to the other legs close to the lower thereof and shaft 2 is journaled weight to the description oration the le by utilizing but a.
therein and has crank arms 3 at'its ends on which rollers 4 are journaled. A spring arm 5 is secured to one of these crank arms and has a handle 6 at its free end while an opening 7 is formed in said handle at a point between its ends and is adapted to receive the beveled end 8 of a. locking tongue 9 which. is secured to the adjacent leg D of the machine; A releasing lever 10 is pivotally connected to the arm 5 at a point between the handle 6 and the opening 7 and this lever projects beyond the 'crank arm 2 and bass handle 11 secured to its free end.
It is to be understood, under ordinary conditionsthc'lower ends of the legs D to which the shaft 2 is connected, will contact with the surface on which the machine mounted and, under these conditions, the rollers at will be pushed upwardly and the arm 5 and lever 10 will be supported as illustrated particularly in Figs. 1 and 3. When it is desired to move the machine from place to place the handle 6 is pushed downwardly, thus causing the lower e of the arm 5 to ride along the beveled edge 8. As the arm 5 is formed of spring metal it will bend laterally during this opregister with the end the said arm gagement with the of tongue-9 whereupon spring laterally into entongue, as shown in Figs.
4; and 5. During the downward movement of the arm 5 the shaft 2 is rotated cnd the rollers 4 are thus projected below the lower ends of the legs and said legs elevated oil of the surface on which they were mounted. When the parts are thus locked, the lower edge of lever 10 rests loosely on the beveled edge 8 back of the arm 5, as shown in Fig. 5. Obviously, therefore, by pushing down on the handle 11, the arm 5 be crowded laterally ofi of the tongue 9 vuntil released, whereupon the legs D will move downwardly into contact with the.
supporting surface.
' of course, thatopening 7 is brought into Although the attachment has been shown applied to two legs, it is to be understood that, if desired, it can be applied to a single single crank arm and r0 er. This arrangement is especially desirable where the machine is supported by three legs.
What isclaimed is 1. A roller attachment including a crank arm, a. roller carried thereby, a spring arm fixedly connccted'to and adapted to actuate arm, a spring handle the crank arm, a beveled tongue for engagement by the arm, and means carried by said arm and cooperating with the tongue for disengaging the arm irom the tongue.
movably connected to the handle for enga ing said means to disengage the han le therefrom.
3. An attachment of the class described including a crank arm, a roller journaled thereon, a spring arm for rotating the crank arm, means for engaging the spring arm to hold it against movement in one direction, and an element carried by the spring arm and cooperating. with said means for releasing the spring arm.
4;. The combination with a structure and a tongue extending therefrom and having a beveled end, of a crank arm connected to said structure, a Supporting wheel journaled thereon, an'arm extendin from and movable with the crank arm, sal arm being yieldable and shiftable into engagement with the end of the tongue, to hold, the roller in a predetermined position relative to the structure, and a lever pivotally connected to the yieldablc armand movable against the beveled end of the tongue to shift'the arm out of engagement with the tongue.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST SCHA'RNWEBER.
