FEATHER DUSTER.
Application filed February 24, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AsA C. TSHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Madisonville, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feather Dusters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a feather duster in which the feathers are evenly distributed, held firmly in the head, and with their loose ends registering evenly.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the parts composing a duster embodying my invention, in the course of manufacture.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a ribbon of feathers and wires or threads, preparatory to being Wound upon a spool or head. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a spool with the ribbon wound and secured thereon. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a completed duster embodying my invention, the handle being omitted, and the socket being broken ofi.
To form the ribbon, the quills or barrels, a, of the feathers are interwoven with wires, threads, or secured to strips of cloth. In Fig. 1 is illustrated a ribbon which I have made by passing a series of wires, 6, alternately 'in front of one quill and in the rear of the adjacent quill, and of alternating the series of wires, I), with a series of wires, 6, which occupy positions to each quill reverse to that of series, 5. The strands, or wires, may be held together at intervals by loops, 6 of wire. A group, B, of feathers of a number such as is desired to place around one groove of the head, are thus interwoven, side by side, and then a space, Z2 is left before the next group, B, is formed. For instance, in a hundred feather duster of three grooves, group, B, would contain thirtyt-hree feathers. The strands are then cut at, N. The formation into ribbons promotes Specification of Letters Patent.

the even distribution of the feathers and the registering of their ends. The headmay consist of a solid cone or preferably may be formed of spools, C, C and C preferably of gradually increasing size. The ribbons are wound upon the spools so that the strands register with the grooves of the spools and are drawn taut, causing the quills to curve inward into the grooves. The ends of the strands are then secured to the head. Upon spool, O, the ribbon containing the shorter feathers is wound. Spool, 0 receives the ribbon with the longest feathers, While spool, C, has the ribbon of the feathers intermediate the aforesaid feathers in length. After the ribbons have been secured upon the spools, the spools are secured together by a bolt, D, which is secured to socket, E, and projects through the bores of the spools. The head of the duster carries the usual ornamental cap or shield F.
What I claim is:
1. In a feather duster the combination of a series of spools, a series of ribbons formed by strands interwoven with the quills of feathers, the feathers of one ribbon differing in length from the feathers of another ribbon, a ribbon wound upon each spool, and a means of securing the spools together into a head With the long feathers overlying the shorter.
2. A feather duster consisting of a head made up of a series of spools, feathers surrounding the spools, strands binding the quills of the feathers into the grooves of the spools, a socket, and a bolt secured to the socket and passing through the bores of the spools.
