Description
dem eine @met dimite.;
WILLIAM E. PHELPS, OF ELMW-OOIL'ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 103,365, dated Maly 24, 1870.
' IMPROVED BOOT-BLACKING ATTACHMENT TO BUREA'US.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, WILLIAM E. Pannes, of Elmwood, in the county of `Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Boot-blackiug Attachment to Bureaus, of which the following is a specification.
Nata-re and Objects o f the Inrenticn.
the boots,'and for containing the implements and materials necessary for the same, which may be kept and used in the parlor or chambers of' the house without any unsightly appearance, and without danger of damage to other furniture.
Description of. the Accompanying Drawings.
Figure 1 is an isometric perspective view of a bureau, showing a drawer partly withdrawn', with my improvements attached.
General Description.
A represent-s an ordinary bureau, or it may .be an ordinary bureau wash-stand, containing more or less drawers, as desired.
B B B" are drawers, B B" being represented'as pushed in and B' partly withdrawn, in order plainly to exhibit its construction and interior arrangements.
C C is a lid or cover to the drawer B', a part of which, C', is hinged to the other part, and may be turned up when the drawer is withdrawn, for purposes hereinafter described.
D is the front part of drawer B', and is' hinged to the bottom of Vthe said drawer, and provided with slides or guards P, in the .usual mannen of hinged turn-down drawer-fronts.
E isa foot-rest, attached to thc bottoni ot the drawer B inside.
F is a recess in the bottom ofthe drawer B', and
Il" is a springseated in the same, for the purpose of holding the blacking-box.
H is also a recess in the bottom of the drawer vB',
and
It is a pan fitting snugly and neatly into the same, into which .the dust and dirt may bc brushed for removal.
The manner of operating with my invention i.,- deemed obvious from the foregoing description.
The drawer B being withdrawn, the front part D isv turned down and the lid Cthrown up.` The boot now being placed ou the foot-rest E, the process of black ing and polishing the same may be proceededwith, the sides of the drawer preventing .any splatterings from the brush reaching furniture or other articles in that direction, and the lid C' preventing their striking and soiling parts of the bureau above the drawer B'.
When desired, the drawer-front may be closed, the v lid C' turned down, and the whole pushed in 4out of sight.
The drawer B", below the improved drawer B', may be either in the form of a drawer, or it may be simply a door, opening into a convenient receptacle for boots, shoes, or other articles.
Any one of the drawers in a bureau or bureau washstand may be used. It will be preferable, however, to always select a drawer situated at a convenient height for the purpose.
Having th'iis described my invention,-
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The drawer B', as constructed, with foot-rest E, recess F,and spring F', recess H, pan h., and lids C C', in combination with bureau A, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
Witnesses:v WILLIAM E. PHELPS.
