CHARLES FELL, OF LORAIN, OHIO, ASSIGNORTO NATIONAL TUBE COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY APPARATUS FOR RIFLING PIPES OR TUBES.
Specification of Letters I'atent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed June 18, 1909. Serial No. 502,987.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns FELL, of Lorain, Lorain county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Rifling Pipes or Tubes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifieation,in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved apparatus and Fig. 2 is a sectional top plan view of the same, thesect-ion of the rifling rollers being on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to providing pipes or tubes with spiral ribs, these being known as rifled tubes.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective mechanism by which this rifling may-be rapidly carried out.
In the drawing, in which I show a pre ferred form of my apparatus,.2 is a hollow frame containing six idle rifling rollers 3. These rollers are shown as spaced equally around the circle Within the housing or frame and set at the proper angle to give the desired pitch to the rifling or grooves in the pipe. I have shown the bearings for these rollers as radially adjustable by means of bearing screws 4. The housing 2 may be secured upon any suitable foundation framin 5.
IBeyond the rifling rollers I rovide a pair of pulling rolls 6, 6, these rol s being set at the same angle as therifling rollers, in relation to the travel of the pipe through the apparatus. These rolls are skew rolls with grooved peripheries arranged to give a pass corresponding to the shape of the pipe. They are power driven through any suita le connections and act to pull the pipe from the rifling rollers after it has entered their bite. In starting the operation, the pipe or tube is forced forwardly through the rifling rollers by means of any suitable rear pushing apparatus, until they enter the bite of the pulling rolls. As the tube passes throu h the rifling housing, and is acted upon by t e rifling rollers, it will be turned or revolved through a plane which will correspond to the angle at which the rifling rollers are set. As soon as the tube enters the pulling rolls these being power driven will actto pull the pipe or tube through the rifling rolls and at the same time cause itto revolve in a plane conforming to the angle at which they are set, which is the same as the angle of the rifle or spiral groove.
The advantages of my invention result from the simplicity of the apparatus and its rapid and efl'ective action in carrying out the rifling operation.
Changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the rifling rollers, and the means supporting the same as wellas in the means for causing the travel of the pipe therethrough while allowing its rotation,
without departing from my invention.
. I claim 1. In apparatus for rifling pipes or tubes, the combination with a series of rifling rolls arranged to contact at a lurality of equidistant points on the perip liery of the pipes or tubes in forming the rifling beads thereon said rolls being angularl adjustable to vary the pitch of the rifling ormed on the pipes or tubes, of means in front of said rifling rolls arranged to draw the pipes or tubes lengthwise between the rifling rolls.
2. In a paratus for riflingpipes or tubes, the combination with a series of rifling rolls arranged to contact at a plurality of equidistant-points on the riphery of the ipes or tubes in forming th: rifling beads t ereon, said rolls being angularly adjustable to rolls arranged to contact at a plurality cf equidistant points on the peripherv of the [pipes or tubes in forming the rifling beads and means for Positively driving said feed thereon, said rolls being angularly adjustrolls. 10
able to vary the pitch of. the rifling formed In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set on the pipes or tubes, of feed rolls in front my hand, of the rifling rolls whereby the pipes or CHARLES FELL.
tubes are drawn lengthwise through the Witnesses: rifling rolls, said rolls being skewed and EDWIN P. COREY;
having a line contact with the pipes or tubes H. J. ELLEM.
