Patented July 23, 1912.
Application tiled October 20, 1910. serial No. 588,074.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALPHONS KREMER, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Gulfport, .in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented. (fir-tam new and useful Improvements in valves cxf which the following is a specificati jn,
This invention relates to valves, and more particularly to what is known. as globe valves, and may be applied to all of the varius rms f valves manufactured, and to valves emplo ed for various purposes, and has tor one o its objects to provide a simply constructed device wherein yield-able packings are. dispensed with, and the pressure of the steam or Water utilized to maintain the valve in steam or water tight condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the movable portions of the valve are arranged steam tight within'the casing and -without exposing any of the fragile portions of the structure to the direct action of the steam or water.
side elevation partly in sect-ion, illustrating a modification in the construction.
The improved device comprises a body 10 having means at one end, at 11, for connecting the intake and with means at the opposite ends, at 12, for connecting the discharge. The casing 10 is of the ordinary construction and provided with an internal valve seat 13 and aninternally threaded opening, represented at 14, above the valve seat. Engaging the threaded opening 14 is a hollow, cap or casing 15 having a longitudinal bore 16 at the upper end and with an annular shoulder 17 adjacent to the bore. The casing 15 is formed with its inner sides extending in parallel relations, and slidably disposed within the casing and closely engaging the same is a relatively elongated sleeve 18 having a valve face 19 at the lower end for engaging the valve seat 13 of the' body. The member 18 is internally threaded, and fitting within this threaded portion is a relatively large threaded plug 20, the
plug being provided at its upper end with an n ar rib 21 for engaging the shoulder 11 The plug 20 is provided with a stem 22 extending beyond the upper end of the cap 15 and provided at its upper end with a suitable hand wheel 23. The hub portion of the hand wheel is provided with a depending annular sleeve 24 which bears around the stem 220i the plug and spaced a con siderable distance therefrom, thus leaving ample space for the reception of a relatively heavy spring 25,v the spring being arranged to bear upon an annular wear member 27, preferably of vulcanite or similar material, so that the cap is relieved largely from the strain otherwise imparted to it when the binding nut 28 of the hand wheel 23 is ap, plied. By this arrangement it will be obvious that the rib 21 is retainedin steam and water tight engagement'with the annular shoulder 17, so that when the hand wheel 23 is rotated, and corresponding motion 'im parted to the plug'20, the valve sleeve 18 will be operated without permitting any steam or water to escape. By this means a packingless valve is produced which is capable' of withstanding any pressure-without leaking. The cap 15 is provided with dovetailed ribs 29, While the member 18 is provided with correspondingly dovetailed channels 30, so that the member 18 is movable longitudinally thereof Within the cap, but is prevented from rotation therein. By this simple means the plug 20, it will be noted,
may be rotated to cause alongitudinal movement to the member 18 and thus open and close the main valve, while at the same time rotary motion of the plug is produced without danger of ieakage around the stem In Fig. 3 is shown a view of the valve showing a modification in the construction,-
the modification consisting in substituting pins 31, preferably of steel, for the dovetailed ribs 29, which perform the same function as the ribs, and may be employed as substitutes therefor under certain conditions if required, but this slight change does not constitute a departure from the principle of the invention, as the operation is the same as when the ribs are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a valve body having a valve seat, a hollow cap having at its upper portion a seat and provided at its upper end with a flat surface, a stem journaled a coiled spring housed within the sleeve and exerting pressure against the wheel to hold said annular rib in engagement with the seat of the cap, a screw plug depending from the stem, and a valve slidably mounted in the cap and restrainedagainst rotation and engaged by said screw plug.
In testimony whereof, I eflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
