Description

G. W. BARNETT. GOLLAPSIBLE DRINKING CUP.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 14. 1912.
Patented July 16, 1912.
WITNESSES UNITE S ATE T ()FFTQE.
CLARENCE W. BARNETT, 0F CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
COLLAPSIBLE DRINKING-CUP.
To all whom it may con corn:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. BAR- NETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin drawing.
This invention relates to drinliing cups of the collapsible type and the principal objectof the invention is to provide an improved type of handle which is provided with a double hinge atits upper end so that the handle may be swung from a collapsible po sition to a position to hold the cup in an ex tended position.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the cup in extended position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the cup in a collapsed position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the upper portion of the cup with the handle turned as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View of the upper section of the cup showing the handle in a position to hold the cup in a set up position, the dotted lines indicating the position assumed by the handle when the cup is in a collapsible position. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the lower sect-ion with the handle in a lowered position. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View of the upper section showing a modified form of joint. Fig. 7 is a sectional View along the line 77 in Fig. 6 with the handle in place.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
it will be seen that this invention comprises a cup having telescoping sections 10, 11 and 12, the upper section having rolled edge 13 and the lower section 12 having an enlarged base 14. The handle 15 is pivotally secured to the upper section 10 by means of the pivot pin 16, which passes through the plate 17 hinged to the upper end of the handle. The handle is curved as shown in Fig. 1 and is formed from spring metal so that when the handle is moved to the posit-ion shown in Fig. 1 it will exert a pressure upon the enlarged base 14, thus having a tendency to hold the cup in an extended position. If desired the base 14, may be provided with a notch 14 forming a seat in which the lower Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 14, 1912.
Patented July 16, 1912. Seri'al No. 677,486.
end of the handle may fit so that the handle will not be liable to slip from the base when using the cup.
WVhen using this cup the sections are drawn out as shown in Fig. l and the handle is turned upon its body so that it may be swung down and its free end fitted upon the enlarged base, thus holding the cup in set up position. When the handle is moved to the position shown in Fig. l, the sections in the cup cannot collapse since the handle is formed from spring metal and, therefore, has a tendency to cause the sections of the cup to fit tightly in place. After using the cup the handle is swung from the base to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the sections collapse. The handle is then turned upon the pivot 16 and is swung in so that it surrounds the upper section. In the preferred form the upper section is of slightly greater diameter than the diameter of the handle, so that it is necessary to spring the handle slightly in order that it may be placed around the upper section to assume the position shown in Fig. 2. This causes the handle to have a binding engagement with the upper section so that it may retain its place. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a cup which is collapsible and which will be securely held in extended position.
In Figs. 6 and 7 there has been shown a modified manner of securing the handle. In this form the handle 15 is provided with a round head 18 which is mounted in a socket joint. The socket is provided with cutout portions forming seats 20 and 21 in which the handle fits when turned.
hat I claim is:
1. A receptacle having collapsible sections, the lower section having an enlarged base, a plate pivotally mounted upon said upper section, and a resilient handle hinged to said plate and adapted to be swung down with its free end resting upon the base of said lower section to hold said receptacle in an extended position, and to be swung to surround the upper sect-ion when said receptacle is in a collapsible position.
2. A receptacle comprising a plurality of telescoping sections, the lower section being provided with an enlarged base, a plate pivotally secured to the outer face of sald upper section and a curved resihent handle hinged to said plate, said handle being of In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my such size that it Will fit snugly around said signature in presence of two Witnesses.
u oer section when said rece tacle is in collfp sible position and so that its free end Will CLARENCE BARNETT engage the base of said lower section to hold Witnesses:
, the section of said receptacle in an extended J. WV. BARNETT,
position. E. L. HINEGARDNER.
