ToaZZ whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, Gnouoi W. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Automatic Fire-Lighter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in automatic fire lighters, the primary object of-the invention being the provision of a I clock released device, which carries a flame producing means, acted upon by a striking means, whereby a flame is conducted to a saturated material, and said material while enveloped in flame is projected to the desired place to light a stove, fire-place or heating plant.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a portable self-contained device, having an alarm clock mounted there on, and actuating an igniting device, which simultaneously ignites an inflammable substance and projects same enveloped in flames to the desired place to receive the flame.
W ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit oft-he invention.

Fig. 3 is a side elvation taken from the opposite side to Fig. 1, with the parts sprung. Fig. 4t is a rear end view of the device. Fig. 5 is a front end view thereof. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the trigger and connection with the alarm key of a clock.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base or support for the device, the two standards 3 and 4, being secured thereto and held relatively to each other and. braced by means of the brace board 2.
Secured to the base 1 near the standard 3, is an alarm clock 5, while pivotally secured upon the rear face of the standard 3, is a curved trigger 6, provided with the spring 7, which normally holds the engaging end or terminal 8, in the path of the rod 11, the purpose of which will presently appear.
Connected to the trigger 6, above the point of connect-ion with the spring 7, is a push pin or trigger releasing rod 9, which when the alarm is wound by the key or ring 10, is placed in engagement with said key 10, so that the spring 7 will hold the trigger in locked position.
The rod 11, is slidably mounted within the guide sleeves 12 and 13, of the standards, and has its knobbed end 1 1, connected with a spring, or an elastic or expansible connection 15, which has its terminals connected to the standard 3, by means of the screw eyes 16. This rod 11 is further provided with the trigger engaging notch 17, which when the rod is set in the positions as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, has this notch engaged by the trigger, and the connection 15 extended so that it exerts a tension to project or protrude the rod 11, when the trigger is released from the notch 17 in the rod 11, by means of the released alarm key 10 pushing upon the rod 9.
larried upon the outer end of the rod 11, is a porous substance, preferably asbestos, as at 18, and this substance is saturated with an inflammable oil, such as kerosene, and has its free end 18, resting upon the match carrier or block 19, which is also carried by the rod 11, and in turn carries the series of matches 20. To strike the matches, and thereby ignite the oil or inflammable sub stance, the flanged strip 21, carrying the striker material or roughened portion 21, is mounted upon the pivoted bar 22, which is normally held in cushioned upwardly tensioned position by means of the spring 23. When the device is set and ready for springing, the parts assume the position as shown in. F igs. 1 and 2, and when released, the elastic connection 15, will pull. the knobbed end l lof the rod 11, toward the standard 3, simultaneously projecting the end carrying the matches, which are given a rubbing action upon the surface 21, which being held toward the matches by the spring 23, produces suiiicient friction to ignite the matches and by reason of the flanges 21, the flame from the match-cs is conducted to the substance 18, and the oil thereon is ignited. The flaming substance is then projected by the rod, and as the device has been placed before the fire-place, stove or the like, ready for starting, the said flaming substance conveys the flame to start the fire, the substance containing suflicient oil,to insure the proper ignition of the kindled fire.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that a portable device, for lighting fires, is provided, and by reason of the spring actuated flame producing and flame conveying rod, that a very useful and inexpensive device is provided.
hat is claimed is:
1. In a device of this character, a base, a spring propelled slid-ably mounted rod carried thereby, an alarm time piece mounted upon said base, a trigger operably connected with the alarm mechanism thereof and in a path to hold the rod against the tension of the spring, a bar having one end pivoted to the base, a spring for normally holding the free end of said bar in engagement with the rod, a match holder and inflammable material mounted upon and carried by the free end of the rod, the inner end of the inflammable material resting upon and in flame receiving position to the match holder, and a match guiding and igniting plate carried by the upper face of the bar and disposed below the match holder and inflammable material when the rod is in set position.
2. In a device of this character, a base, two standards rising therefrom, a spring propelled rod slidably mounted in said standards, an alarm'timepiece mounted upon said base near the standards, a trigger operably connected to one of said standards and to the alarm mechanism of the clock, the engaging end of said trigger being in the path to hold the rod against the tension of the spring, a bar having one end pivoted to the other standard and having its free end extending away from the standard and base, a spring for holding the free end of said bar upwardly and frictionally against the rod, an inflammable material carried by the eX treme end of the rod, a match holder disposed upon the'rod adjacent to the inflammable material and adapted when the rod is engaged by the trigger to rest cushionedly upon the free end of the bar, the end of the inflammable material adjacent the holder and resting upon the holder to receive the flame from the ignited matches therein, and a striking plate carried upon the free end of Copies of this patent may be obtained for the bar and adapted to engage the matches carried by the holder.

In a device of this character, a base, a pair of parallel standards carried by the base, and provided with alined guides in the upper ends, a rod slidably mounted in said guides, a spring connected to one end of said rod and one of the standards, an alarm clock mounted upon the base, a trigger pivoted upon the standard to which the spring is attached and operably connected to the alarm mechanism of the clock, said trigger engaging the rod to hold the same in retracted position against the tension of the spring, an inflammable material carried by the other end of said rod and having a rearwardly extending. terminal, a match holder also carried by said arm and'rod and in contact with the rear terminal of said inflaminable material, a bar having one end pivoted to the other standard and extending inwardly and below the rod, a plate provided with parallel flanges mounted upon the upper face of said bar, said plate being provided with a striking surface to engage the matches in the match holder, and a spring mounted in said standard and having its terminals engage the base and the bar to l.
