Description

M. K. MILLER. JAR CLOSURE.
APPLICATION rmm MAR.29, 1912;

LUMBIA PLANOORAPH co., WASHINGTON n c T @FFIQE.
MARY K. MILLER, or MANOR, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAR-CLOSURE.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY K. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manor, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful J ar-Closure; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful jar closure, applicable to any make of jar, whether it be constructed of glass, stone, masonry or any other suitable material.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a jar closure having novel features of construction.
The principal feature is the provision of a metallic strap embracing the bottom and the sides of a ar, to which a wire bail member is pivoted, which bail member has a portion extending transversely of the closure proper.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings;Figure l is a view in perspective of a jar showing the improved closure applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view of the closure with the attendant parts removed from the jar.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the ar, which may be of any conventional construction. The jar is provided with a transverse recess in its bottom. This recess is denoted by the numeral 2. The closure proper 4: is constructed of porcelain or any other suitable material. Extending transversely of the closure is a bail member 5 having downwardly extending arms 6, which are pivotally connected to the upper ends 7 of the arms of the metallic strap 8, which is seated in the recess '2 in the bottom of the jar. The upper ends 7 of the arms 10 of the metallic strap are provided with recesses 11, the side walls of which contact with the Specification of Letters Patent.

downwardly extending arms of the bail member, to limit the metallic strap in its swinging movement, when detaching the same. Arranged between the closure and the mouth or opening of the jar is a rubber gasket or the like 12, which renders a fluidtight connection between the closure and the 1 To remove the closure the strap is swung laterally from the jar for the recess is very shallow, in order to permit of such action. When the metallic strap is swung laterally, the closure is free to be raised. In Fig. 1 the metallic strap is shown in dotted lines as swung laterally of the jar.
From the foregoing it will be noted that there has been devised a novel and eflicient jar closure, and one which has been found practical and desirable.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination with a jar, a closure therefor, a bail member on which the closure is fulcrumed, and a metallic strap embracing the bottom and the sides of the jar and connected to the bail member.
2. In combination, a jar, a closure therefor, a wire bail member having a portion arranged transversely of the closure and pro vided with downwardly extending arms, a U-shaped metallic strap engaging the bottom of the jar with its arms lying against the sides of the jar, the arms of the strap having recesses in which the arms of the bail member are arranged to limit the metallic strap in its movement, and connections between the arms of the U shaped strap and the bail member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARY K. MILLER.
