To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. DEUGHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tifiin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Nut- Lock, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to nut locks, and has for its object to provide a convenient,
efiicient and inexpensive means for locking nuts upon bolts.
A further object is to provide a locking member engageable with the nut to retain same upon the bolt which may be released and ejected by means of a suitable key.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention is embodied in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Referring in detail to the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, the bolt is designated at 5, the same being provided with one or more longitudinal channels 6 cutting the threads on the periphery thereof. The nut is designated, at 7, being of the usual polygonal type, and in the tap thereof is provided with a longitudinal channel 13 cutting the threads thereof, while a channel 12 is provided in the periphery of the nut, the same being in a radial line with the former channel. A spring latch 8 is secured to the periphery of the nut over the channel 12 by means of a plate 11 which is riveted or otherwise secured to the nut over one end of the latch, and the free end thereof projects beyond the face of the nut and is curved outwardly as designated at 10, the latch being provided with an aperture 9 therein in its free end. The locking member is designated at 14 and is of approximate U-shape, the respective arms being designated at 15 and 16. The arm 15 is tapered on its outer face and near the inner end thereof is provided with an outer shoulder 17.
The key used in connection with this nut lock is designated at 18 having one end thereof bifurcated to form tines 19.
In use, the nut is screwed upon the bolt in the customary manner until. the same reaches the desired position, the inner channel 13 thereof being made to coincide with one of the channels 6 of the bolt. The locking member is then engaged with the nut by inserting the arms thereof into the channels of the nut whereupon the shorter or inner arm 15 in being inserted into the tap of the nut engages the channel 6 of the bolt, and the outer or longer arm 16 in being inserted in rear of the latch 8 causes the shoulder 17 thereof to be engaged by the latch 8 to interlock the arm 16 and the latch, thus retaining the locking member in position, and thereby preventing the rotation of the nut. The locking member may be readily released from the nut by inserting one tine 19 of the key bet-ween the arms thereof and swinging the other tine outward to engage the free end of the latch 8 whereby the latch is forced outwardly to free the shoulder 17 and upon turning the key further the former tine is made to swing thereby ejecting the locking member from the nut, whereupon the nut is free to be rotated upon the bolt to loosen or tighten same as may be desirable or necessary.
It will be seen that this invention may be applied to ordinary nuts and bolts at a small cost, and in use the same is both efficient and convenient, not interfering in any manner with the customary use of the nut and bolt.
It is also to be understood that this invention is susceptible of slight alterations in its details within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a nut having a channel in the tap thereof and a channel in the periphery thereof, and a spring latch secured to the periphery of the nut over the outer channel, of a locking member having arms insertible into the channels, the outer arm and latch being adapted to interlock.
