BUILDING-BLOCK MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REASON C. WILLIAM- SON, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Carlisle, Warren county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Building-Block Mold, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved mold for building-blocks, which blocks are curved on an arc in plan view and are adapted for use in building cisterns, silos and the like.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved device, dotted lines indicating a pallet. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device, dotted lines indicating the mold members in open position. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the indicated line 44 of Fig. 2.
In the construction of the device as shown a frame is provided and is composed of legs 10, 11, 12, 13 carrying sills 14, 15 at their upper ends. The legs 10, 11 are braced to the sill 14 by braces 16, 17 and the legs 12, 13 are braced to the sill 15 by braces 18, 19. The pairs of legs 10, 13 and 11, 12 are connected by end braces 20, 21 respectively. The frame preferably is made of angle iron as by bolts 22, but may be made of wood or any other suitable material. The sills 14, 15 are parallel and spaced apart and are adapted to support a pallet 23 of any desired form and material. A mold is provided and is adapted to be supported by the frame in a position above the pallet 23.
The mold is composed of a back plate 24, front plate 25 and end plates 26, 27. The back plate 24 and front plate 25 are curved on arcs of concentric circles and the end plates 26, 27 extend radially thereof, the front plate being somewhat shorter than the back plate. Arms 28, 29 are fixed to and extend downwardly from the rear face of the back plate 24. The arms 28, 29 are offset rearwardly near the lower margin of the back plate 24 to carry their lower ends back of the sill 15. The lower end portions of the arms 28, 29 are apertured and are pivoted by means of bolts 30, 31 to apertured hinge members 32, 33 fixed to the rear face of said sill 15. Thus the back plate 24 is adapted for rearward movement through an are relative to the sill 15. An arm 34 is fixed to the rear face of the sill l5 intermediate of the hinge members 32, 33, extends rearwardly and upwardly therefrom in a curve, and serves as a rest for the back plate 24 when the same is in open position. Arms 35, 36 are fixed to and extend downwardly from the front face of the front plate 25. The arms 35, 36 are offset forwardly near the lower margin of the front plate 25 so as to carry their lower ends into a vertical plane in front of the sill 14. The lower end portions of the arms 35, 36 are twisted into planes at right angles to the front face of the sill 14 and are apertured and pivoted by means of a rod 37 to apertured hinge members 38, 39 fixed to the front face of the sill 14. Thus the front plate 25 is adapted for forward and downward movement through an are relative to the sill 14. The end plates 26, 27 are secured by means of hinges 40, 41 to the ends of the back plate 24 and are adapted to close the spaces between the ends of the back plate and the ends of the front plate 25. Latch bars 42, 43 are pivoted at their rear ends to the outer faces of the end plates- 26, 27 respectively and are adapted to engage with catches 44, 45 fixed to and projecting from end portions of the front plate 25 and hold said end plates in closed position.
VVhen the parts are in closed position as shown the back plate, front plate and end plates form a box or mold of semi-annular form, open at its top, and the pallet 23 comprises the bottom thereof. By means of this mold concrete blocks may be made which will be suitable for use in the construction of cisterns, silos or other structures of cylindrical form. The latch bars 42, 43 preferably extend forwardly beyond the front plate 25 for manual grasp in manipulating the end plates. Core molds 46, 47 are formed on or fixed to and extend vertically of central port-ions of the inner faces of the end plates 26, 27 and are adapted to form mortar cores in the ends of the completed blocks. Stops 48, 49 are fixed to the outer faces of the end plates 26, 27 above the latch bars 42, 43 and said stops are adapted to limit upward movement of said latch bars relative to the end plates and serve to connect said latch bars and end plates in such manner that the bars may be employed as levers to tilt the back plate 21 and end plates rearwardly into open position.
In practical use of this device the pallet 23 is placed in horizontal position on the sills 14-, 15 of the supporting frame and the mold members are closed and latched together .as shown and described. Cement composition or concrete is then poured and tamped into the mold and allowed to set a sufficient length of time. Then the mold is opened away from the block by raising the latch bars 42, 13 to disengage them from the catches ME, 45. The end plates 26, 27 are then swung outwardly ,on the hinges 40, ll and the back plate 2 1 and end plates are conjunctively swung backward, on the hinge connections of the back plate, through the medium of the latch bars and stops &8, 49 limiting upward movement of said bars relative to the end plates, to a position of rest against the arm 34:. The front plate is swung forwardly and downwardly on its hinge connections and is allowed to hang from the rod 37 as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. Then the pallet 23 and block may be lifted and carried to the desired location for further curing. Other pallets 23 may successively be placed on the frame and other blocks be molded as desired.
I claim as my invention- A mold for building-blocks, comprising a supporting frame, angular hinge members fixed to and extending downwardly and outwardly from the upper portion of said frame, arms pivoted to the extremities of said hinge members, said arms ofiset inwardly intermediate of their ends, front and back plates fixed to free end portions of said arms in spaced relations to each other, said front and back plates spaced from said frame, a pallet mounted on said frame beneath and projecting on all sides from said plates, end plates hinged at their rear ends to end portions of said back plate, catches fixed to and projecting beyond the ends of the front plate, latch arms pivoted at their rear ends on the end plates and adapted to engage said catches, stops on the end plates above said latch bars whereby the latch bars are connected to the end plates auxiliary to the pivotal connections thereof, and a stop on the frame at the rear of and spaced from the back plate.
