To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER C. Hor- KrNs and HORACE M. MORGAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a vulcanizer for rubber tires, and is especially adapted for use in vulcanizing pneumatic tires as used at present upon automobiles.
The object of the invention is to support the tire in proper position and to economize heat by holding the greater portion of it in the vulcanizing chamber. In order to obtain these advantages we employ the construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the vulcanizer. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, a tire support being removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the supporting legs employed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a packing ring adapted to be inserted in a tire during the vulcanizing process.
In the drawings 1 represents a suitable cylindrical receptacle carried b y supporting brackets 2 and having a removable top 3. A steam pipe 4 leads frolna suitable steam boiler and is secured to a T-coupling 5. The inner end of a horizontally arranged spiral coil 6 is carried down through the bottom of the receptacle l and connected to the T- coupling 5. This coil 6 at its outer end connects to a vertical coil 7 which incloses the greater portion of the vulcanizing chamber, the coil being spaced from the side of the receptacle by an asbestos lining 8. Similar linings 9 and 10 are placed also upon the bottom of the receptacle and upon the under side of the cover 3, so that the inner vulcanizing chamber is inclosed by a nonconductor of heat. The upper portion of the coil 7 leads through one side of the receptacle and is then carried downwardly as shown at 11 and then beneath the receptacle where it joins the T-coupling 5. A circular platform 12 is placed in the vulcanizing chamber and is supported above the coil 6 by means of suitable supporting legs 13, formed of wires, each of said wires being bent and curved in a horizontal plane at its lower end to form a foot portion 14, and being Copies of this patent may be obtained for bent at a right angle at their upper ends to form a supporting head 15. These supporting legs can be readily lifted from the receptacle, and the platform .12 rests loosely upon them. In order to hold the tires in the proper shape when deflated for vulcanizing we employ a ring 16 formed of any suitable flexible wadding or packing material. A ring is slipped within the tire before the latter is placed upon the platform 12. In the top of the receptacle is placed a thermometer 17 A suitable steam pressure gage 18 is carried by the steam pipe portion 11.
It will be understood that a number of tires can be placed in the receptacle at the same time, and by causing steam to circulate through the coil the interior of the receptacle can be quickly brought to the proper temperature for the purpose required.
What we claim is 1. In a device of the kind described, a cylindrical receptacle, a spiral coil arranged upon the bottom of the receptacle and having its inner end extending .downwardly through said bottom, a vertical coil arranged adjacent the sides of the receptacle and connected to the first mentioned coil, and a supply steam pipe having communication with the inner end of the lirst mentioned coil and the upper end of the second mentioned coil.
2. In a vulcanizer, a cylinder, a removable top, a steam coil covering the bottom and extending around the sides of the' cylinder, an asbestos lining spacing said coil from the cylinder, a steam pipe having communication with said coil at each end, removable supporting legs adapted to rest upon the bottom portion of the coil, and a removable platform adapted to rest upon said supporting legs.
3. In a vulcanizer, a steam coil comprising a bottom and side portions, a receptacle inclosing said coil, removable supporting legs adapted to stand upon the bottom section of the coil, and provided at their outer ends with heads, and a tire supporting platform adapted to fit within the side portion of the coil and rest uponsaid heads.
