HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 11, 1912.
Application filed March 18, 1912. Serial No. 684,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORA C. SHAFFER, citizen of the United States, residing at Van VVert, in the county of Van VVert and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im provements in Hasps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to hasps such as carry latches for retaining the hasps on staples; and it contemplates the provision of a hasp equipped with a latch so relatively arranged to the staple-receiving opening of the hasp as'not to be rendered inoperative or otherwise affected in the event that it is necessary to bend the hasp around the corner of a post or other part of a building or around the corner of a square box or other device.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a hasp having a latch that can be readily positioned out of the way when it is desired to secure the hasp on a staple through the medium of a pad-lock or the like.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the combination device showing by full lines the position in which the latch is placedwhen it is desired to use a pad-lock to lock the hasp on a staple. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the hasp as bent into approximate rightangle form without affecting the utility of the latch in any degree.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings.
The metallic hasp 1 is adapted to be bent, and is provided adjacent its rear end with an aperture 2 to permit of its ready connection to the support by which it is carried. Adjacent its opposite end the hasp is provided with the usual longitudinal slot 3, designed to receive a staple in the conventional manner.
Pivoted to the face of the hasp 1 at the opposite side of the slot 3, with reference to the aperture 2, is the latch 4: which is adapted as shown to swing in a plane parallel to that of the hasp 1,. The said latch may be of any construction consonant with the purpose of my invention without involving departure from the same as claimed. I prefer, however, to have the latch comprise two arms 5 disposed at acute angles to each other; each of the said arms 5 being provided with an outwardly directed finger-piece 6, and an angularly disposed terminal 7 for entering a staple and securing the hasp thereon. The provision of the arms 5 with their appurtenances is advantageous inasmuch as it adapts the combined device for use when the hasp extends toward the left from its point of connection 2 and also when the hasp extends toward the right from said point of connection. The finger-pieces 6 manifestly adapt the latch to be conveniently manipulated, and it will also be appreciated that the said pieces 6 are adapted to receive the blows of a hammer when the latch is incased in ice and fixed in position thereby.
The chief feature of my invention consists in the mounting of the latch 4 adjacent one end of the hasp l and at the opposite side of the slot 8, with reference to the end of the hasp that is adapted to be connected to the support by which the hasp is carried. By virtue of such relative arrangement it will be manifest that the hasp may be bent at right angles as shown in Fig. 2, or may be bent at any other angle, as occasion demands, without affecting the utility of the latch or impairing the free working of the same.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that the latch 4 may be cheaply formed of a single piece of metal, and expeditiously and easily connected to the hasp, and that therefore the said latch does not materially increase the cost of production of the hasp.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is:
1. The combination with a hasp constructed at one end to be connected with a support by which the hasp is to be carried and having adjacent its opposite end a staple-receiving slot, of a latch connected in a pivotal manner to the hasp at the opposite side of the slot therein, with reference to the end of the hasp that is constructed to be connected with a support, and having arms movable in a plane alongside the face of the hasp and also having outwardly directed finger-pieces on said arms and angularly disnals on the arms adapted to be positioned in 10 posed terminals at the ends of the arms a staple or the like. adaptedto be positioned in a staple. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 2. The combination with a hasp having a my hand in presence of two subscribing witslot, of a latch pivoted to the hasp and movnesses.
