FRANK POWYSZENSKI, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REMVABLE HEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
` Patented June 11,1912.
Application filed January 29, 1912. serial No. 674,064.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PowYsznNsKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Heels, of which the :following is a specification.
This invention relates to removable heels for shoes and like foot wear, and more es# pecially to that type of removable heels in which the heel members are attached together by a dovetail connection. And the present improvement has for its .object to provide a simple and efficint structural formation and combination of parts whereby a very strong and substantial connection.of the heel member is effected in a readily detachable manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1, is a longitudinal section on line -m, Fig. 2, of a heel embodying the present invention. Fig. l2, is an elevation of the forward end of the heel. Fig. 3, is an inverted plan view on line m-w, Fig. 1, of the fixed heel member. Fig. 4, is a plan view on line m-, Fig. 1, of the removable heel member. Fig. 5, is a transverse section on line a02-m2, Fig. 1. Fig. 6, is a detail perspective view of the combined reinforcing member and nut of the removable heel member.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the upper member of the shoe heel forming a fixed part of the shoe, and which in the present construction is formed with a U shape central projection 2 'on its under side, the marginal walls of which are undercut as shown, to constitute a portion of the dovetail vconnection hereinafter described. The said projection 2 is also formed with a central lon itudinal bore 3, for the passage of the herelnafter described attaching bolt.
4 is the removable heel member formed with a central U shape recess 5, on its upper face, the marginal walls of which are undercut to correspond with and fit the undercut walls of the projection 2 of the fixed heel member 1 aforesaid, and constitute the dovetail connection by which the heel members are connected together in a firm and substantial manner.
6 is the longitudinal screw or bolt above referred to, arran ed in the longitudinal bore 3 of the pro]ection 2 aforesaid, and having a head 7 that has bearing against the forward end of said projection 2, as shown.
8 is a screw-threaded lug located at the rear end of the recess 5 aforesaid, and carried on the rear end of the hereinafter de-, scribed reinforcing member. Said lug is adapted for engagement with the screwthreaded end of the longitudinal bolt 6, aforesaid.
9 is the metal reinforcing member above referred to, and which is embedded in the material of the removable heel member 11, as shown. At its rear end the member 9 carries the centrally arranged screw-threaded lug 8, and at its forward end a pair of counterpart inclined lugs 9', the inner faces of which are preferably Hush with inclined side walls of the dovetail recess 5, aforesaid, to form parts thereof.
In the preferred form of the present invention the inclined side lugs l9 are integrally connected together by a transverse web, as shown, and in like manner connected to the screw-threaded lug 8, by curved webs 10, the whole forming a skeleton reinforcing member adapted to be securely embedded in the material of the removable heel, and afford strength and stability to the. engagement between the hub parts.
' With the present improvement the longitudinal bolt 6, not only holds the parts in proper posit-ion,`but in addition is adapted to draw the same together in such position.
`Having thus fully described my'said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A removable heel, comprising a fixed and a removable member, one member being formed with a dovetail projection and the other with a. counterpart dovetail recess, a.
reinforcing member embedded inthe member containing the dovetail recess aforesaid, and having a vertical screw-threaded lug at its rear end and a pair of 'inclined lugs at its forward side ends, and a longitudinal bolt passing through the aforesaid dovetail projection and engaging said screw-threaded 1o lug, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 26th day of January, 1912.
