DUMP-CAR consrnuc'rron.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented May 21,1912,
Application and July 3, 1911. Serial no. 636,703., v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MoOU'roHnoN COLEMAN, resident of 356 Olivier avenue, in the city of Westmount, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, a
citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Car Construction; and I do hereby declare that the vfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I i
The invention relates to improvementsand to hang freely in its open position.
opening and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional'detail of the;
The objects of the invention are to devise a swing door, which may be readily closed into a dump opening and form a tight joint to prevent the loss of grain or granulated cargo, and generally to provide a cheap, convenient and durable formof door mechanism for dump cars.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a chute, showing the dump a door in its closed position.
joints, showing the door in its open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of the cross beam, joining the set of doors and the end of the operating arm connected thereto. Fig. i-is a front elevation of the hoppers, showing the arm extending therebetween to the cross beam connecting the two doors. Fig. 5 is -a perspective detail of the door. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the loop and ring. Fig. 7 is an enlarged elevational detail of the lower end of a chute showing one of the locking dogs engaging a door.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view on the line A.B in Fig. 4. Fig. 9 is a side elevational detail of the upper end of a chute showing part of the operating mechanism and a locking arrangement.
Like numerals .of reference indicate cor responding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 are'the side walls of the chute, 2 the bottomsthereof, 3 the end walls, said end walls terminating at the dump openings 4, said chutes being in substantially parallel arrangement and havthat form part wardly open position, that is,
ing the dump openings in alinement. 5 is an outturned flange from the lower end of the upper portion of an end wall 3, in each of said chutes. 6 is a parallelly arranged outturned flange adjacentto the outturned flange 5 and forming therewith a pocket. T is a flange parallel with the bottom 2 and forming therewith a pocket. 8 and 9 are side flanges, forming with said side walls '1, pockets connecting thefpockets at theupper and lower ends of said dump opening.
10 and 11 are flanges extending inwardly from the inner face of the door 12 completely therearound and forming a pocket into which the flange 6, the bottom 2 and the sides 1 are introduced in the closed po sition of the door.
13 is a bracket rigidly secured to an upper end wall 3. j
14 is a bracket rigidly secured to the door 12 intermediate of the height thereof.
15 is a loop secured in the bracket-"13 and the bracket 14 at the upper end of the door and in its closed position closely fitting over said top end of the door and in its open position,
16 is a cross beam, outer face of each door 12.
17 is an arm pivotally secured at one of .its ends to the beam 16.between the chutes and at the other endsecured to the gear '18, said gear .coacting with the worm 19, the latter bein gear 18 is journaled in. the bearings 21- and the shaft 20 in the bearings 22' supported from the under side of the car body.
23 is a crank for operating the shaft20.
24 aredogs, each dog, being pivotally secured to theside wall of the chute having asquared slot 25 looking to a sqiiaredsliaft 26. extending from the lower ends .of each door 12.
27 is a dog pivotally supported fromthe car body and adapted to engage the square portion of. the) shaft 20 and locksaid shaft. In the operation of this car, is.-turned,, which throws the arm .17 rearwhen the doors are in their closed having a squared slot 28 and the crank 23 allowing each door to swing free. I rigidly secured to the mounted on the shaft '20. The r position and this forces both doors to'their it takes the flanges doors are brought back again, the'hinges V A will draw up the doors so that the flanges will be brought into the proper position to enter the several pockets and thus a grain tight joint is secured.
' having a dump opening and double plate formation around said dump opening form- What I claim as my invention is: 1. In dump car construction, a car body having a dump opening and double plate formation around said dump opening forming pockets and a door having a link hinge support from one end and double plate inwardly extending flanges forming pockets, said hinge being adapted to draw said flanges andpockets into register in the closing operation.
2. In dump'car construction, a car body ing a continuous pocket and a swinging door having a loop hin'ge supporting it from one of the sides of the dump opening and double plate flange formation extending from an inside face and forming a continuous pocket,
said door being adapted to swing freely from said opening and in closing, to draw into place, bytmeans of said hinge connection, said flanges from the door entering the dump opening pocket. and said flanges from around the edge of the dump openingentering the door pocket.
3. In dump car'construction, a car body having a chute'therebeneath and a dump opening in the end wall of said chute, said end wall and bottom and sides of the chute having double plate formations formed by outwardly extending flanges around said dump opening, a door, having around the a double plate formation formed by flanges around said dump opening, a pair of doors having double plate formations formed by flanges extending inwardly from the inside face and coacting with the aforesaid double plate formation, hinges securing said doors to the upper portion of the end walls of the chutes and formed with brackets and loops connecting the brackets, a cross beam rigidly secured to and connecting said doors, an arm pivot-ally secured to said beam at one end, and a worm and gear mechanism connected to the other end of said arm suitably operated.
Signed at the city and district of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this twelfth day of June, 1911.
JAMES MOGUTOHEON COLEMAN.
