Specification of Letters Patent.
. Paientediuay 21, 1912.
Application filed November 11, 1910. serial No. 591,897.
To all whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, ALONZO L. BELT, a citizen of the United States, and afresident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bumping-Posts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a bumping post for use at the termination of a railroad track to limit the movement of a car or train in that direction.
It is the object of my invention to provide `a bumping post, of simple, eflicient and durable construction, having an elastic or resilient buffer, whereby the shock of impact is absorbed and the life of the bumping post and car prolonged.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a plan view, Fig. 3 is a section on l1ne a-a of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the buffer.
The numeral 1 indicates the rails of a railroad track; said railsbeing fixed to the ties 2 in the usual manner. Upon the ties, and between the rails near the termination of the track is set a base block 3, the same being bolted to the rails if desirable. Said base block may be of wood or other suitable material, and the to thereof has a square depression into whic the post 4 is set; said post is preferably of metal, and has in its front side cups or depressions, 5, preferably six in number. The casing 6 for the buffer 7, said buffer being of metalor other suitable material, is made of sheet metal of a suitable thickness and is bolted onto the post 4 as shown at 8 and 9. i Said casing has inturned flanges 10 at its frontV end, which is open, to limit the forward movement of the buffer 7, which is forced against said flanges by springs 11, mounted between the post 4 and said buer in cups 12 in the rear side of the buffer and in the cups 5 in the front of the post 4. The front end of the buffer casing is supported on a bridge 13 between i the rails. The buffer rides on rollers 19,
suitably mounted in the base thereof.
Bolted to the post 4, similarly on each side thereof, are braces 14 and 15; the braces 14 extending backwardly and being bolted to the inside of the rails at a suitable distance in the rear, and the braces 15 extending forward and being similarly attached to the rails at a suitable distance in front of the post. To strengthen and maintain the rigidity of the braces 1'4 on either side of the post, are braces 16, each of said braces 16 being bolted to the outside of the rail at a point about opposite the middle of the post and extending back and upwardly to meet the brace 14 at about the middle of its length, and being bolted thereto. Braces 17, also bolted to the outside of the rails on both sides of the post in front of the braces 16, extend upwardly and inwardly to the top of the louder casing, where they are bolted to extending ianges of .said top, as shown at 18; said braces 17 serving, in connection with the other braces to prevent the rearward displacement of the post and also, by reason of their inwardV inclination, the latlfraD displacement of thebuder casing and u er.
From the foregoing description the operation and value of my "new bumping post will be at once apparent; yany shock by impact on the buffer 7 being taken up by the springs between said buer and the post, the
A bumping post comprising a base, apost, I
the upper surface of said base being recessed to engage said post, a casing mounted on said post, a buffer mounted in said casing,
springs interposed between said buffer andY said post and mounted in depressions in said buffer and post, a pair of opposed braces on each side of said post, ixedly securing the upper portion of said post to the rails at points in front of and behind said post, a In testimony whereof, I have hereunto Connecting brace on each side of said post subscribed my name this 9 day of November l0 interposed between the outer side of the rail 1910.
and the rear post brace, and a brace on each side of said post opposed to the connecting ALONZO'L' BELT' brace and interposed between the outer side Witnesses:
of the rail and the upper portion of the CHARLES W. HOFFMAN,
buffer rigidly to sustain the same. ARTHUR H. EWALD.
