DISPENSING-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May21', 1912.
Application filed September 11, 1911. Serial No. 648,671.
foe-ll whom it may concern- Be it known that. I, \Vua is F. France. a citizen of the United States, residing at' Seattle, in the county of King and State of lvashington. have invented a new and useful DispensingCan, of which the following is a specification. I
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device which may be attached to the outside of a container of any sort. to. t'acilitate the removal of the contents of the container, the device being so cmistructed that when it is not in use, it may be folded up into approximate parallelism with the side wall of the container.
A further object of the invention is to pro vid 'a device of this character having a frangible closure, the device including a delivery trough which may be folded upwardly to serve as a protection for theclosure.
iVith thet'oregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and clain'icd, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying tlrawings,- -Figure 1 shows in perspective, a portion of a receptacle equipped with the device. constituting the subject-twitter ot' the present invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the structure shown in Fig. t; Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the portion of the device folded upwardly against thev receptacle, and there retained; and Fig. l is a section upon the. line A-B of Fig.
In ,the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes generally. a receptacle which may be of any shapc, and which may be fashioned from any material. In the receptacle 1 there are one or more openings 2, closed by a frangible covering 3 which may be located upon the outside of the receptacle 1. The frangible closure 3 may be fashioned from paper glass, or other material which will puucturc more readily than will the side wall of the receptacle 1.
The iuvcution further includes a delivery member. comprising a body portion land a foldable trough t3, the body 1- and the trough 6 being preferably fashioned in one piece, of flexible material. The body tis ordinarily secured to the outer wall of the receptacle 1, over the frangible closure 3, and upon the outer face of the body 4 may be secured a reinforcing plate 5, the plate 5 and the body -t having openings alining with the openings 2 in the receptacle 1, so that the 't'rangible closure 3 may be readily accessible. At its outer end, the trough is equipped with a delivery notch T. facilitating the pourin away of the contents of the receptacle 1. g flexible sealing strip 8 is secured to the lower face of the trough (3, transversely of the same, the strip 8 extending terminally beyond the side edges of the trough 6. If desired, the strip 8 may be provided adjacent its ends with adhesive material, indicated at 10. It may be noted at this point thatowing to the fact that the sealing strip 8 extends across the notch 7, the trough 6 will be prevented from splitting lnickwardly, from the apex of the notch 7.
When the parts are disposed as shown 'in Figs. 1 and 2. the trough 6 may be swung upwardly. into approximate parallelism with the body 4, to constitute a closure for the openings Jfand to constitute a protection for the frangible closure 3; The adhesive material upon the ends of the, strip 8 will permit the strip to be. assembled with the receptacle 1. as shown in Fig. 3, thereby to maintain the trough 6 in the position above specified.
When it is desired to remove the contents of the receptacle, the flexible strip 8 is broken, permitting the trough 6 to be, lowered into the position shown in Fig. 4. The frangible closure 3 is then broken, whcre upon the contents of the receptacle may be poured away, the contents of the receptacle flowing through the opening. into the trough (l.
llaviug thus described the invention, whatis claimed is:--- 4 1. In -a device of the class described. a delivery member comprising a body and a foldable trough; and a flexible dtrip extended transversely of the trough and protruding at both ends beyond the trough. the strip being located at the discharge end of the trough to. prevent a splitting of the discharge endot' the trough those portions of the strip which protrude )cyondthe trough constitptiug means for securing the trough in parallelism with the body.
2. In a device of the class described, a delivery mcmber comprising a body and a foldable trough; and a flexible strip extended transversely of the trough and protruding at both ends beyond the trough, the strip being located at the discharge end of the trough to prevent a splitting thereof, said ends being provided with adhesive material,
3. In a device of the class described, a delivery member fashioned from a single plate there being an opening in the body at one side of the crease; and a frangible closure for the -opening.
4. In a device of the class described, a delivery member comprising a body and a foldable trou '11; there being an opening in the body; a .rangible closure for the opening; and a sealing member carried by the trough and extended beyond both the end and lateral edges of the trough, the'trough being foldable into parallelism Wit the body, to house the closure, and to cause the sealing member to extend beyond the end of the body. P
5. In'a device of the class described, a tielivery member comprising in a one piece structure a body and a foldable trough; the
body having an opening therein; a frangible G. In a device of the class described, a delivery member comprising a body and a foldable trough, the trough having a delivery notch at its outer end; and a flexible strip secured to the trough and extended across -the notch, the ends of the strip projecting beyond the trough, the ends of the strip having means to engage the receptacle Where- With the delivery member is assembled, thereby to hold the trough and the body in approximate parallelism.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses WILLIS F. PIERCE.
