WASTE-COTTON CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1912.
Application filed February 27, 1911. Serial No. 810,887.
To all whom it may concern lle it known that I, Louis l. Do1z'A1s, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and useful Waste-Cotton Container, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles for containing waste material such as cotton that has been used by physicians in surgical and other operations and has for its object to provide a receptacle that is sanitary.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle that is neat in appearance and one that can be emptied of its con tents without bringing the hands in contact with the same and when it is emptied it can quickly be arranged for immediate use again.
In the accompanyingdrawing :--Figure 1 is a perspective view of the container. Fig. 2 is a vertical. sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed side elevation of a lower portion of the same.
The outer casing l of the container is perforated as at 2 for ventilation, a ring 3 is provided to fit over the upper edge of the casing 1e and is provided with a depending flange 4. The casing 1 is adapted to receive the body of a flexible bag 5 of paper or other suitable material the mouth portion of the bag being folded over the upper edge of the said casing. When this is done the flange 4 of the ring is slipped down over the outer portion of the mouth of the bag and thus the bag is secured in position in the said casing 1. The bottom 6 of the casing 1 is hingedly connected thereto and is provided at its edge portion opposite that point at which it is hinged to the said casing with an eye 7 which when the bottom is closed is adapted to pass up along the lower portion of the side of the casing 1. Eyes 8 are mounted upon the lower portion of the easing 1 and a bolt 9 is slidably mounted in the eyes 8. One end portion of the bolt 9 is adapted to enter the eye 7 and thus means is provided for fixedly securing the hinged bottom 6 with relation to the casing 1. The bolt 9 is provided ata point intermediate the eyes 8 with a crank portion 10 which may serve as a handle and also serve as means for limiting the longitudinal move-' ment of the bolt 9 in the eyes 8.
The cotton as it is used by a physician is thrown into the container and when it is desired to empty the contents of the container, the ring 3 is removed and the casing 1 is lifted up-by means of handles 11 which are provided upon its op osite sides and turned upside down with tiiat end portion from which the ring 3 is removed inserted in the opening of a stove. The container is thus permitted to rest upon the top of the stove with the handles 11 at the edges of the hole thereof then the bolt 9 is withdrawn from the eye 7 and the bottom 6 is swung back. When this is done a stick or poker 1s projected down into the casing '1 against the bag 5 and the said bag together with its contents is forced into the stove where the contents and bag are ignited; When this is done the casing 1 is removed from the stove and a clean bag is positioned therein. The said bag holds the cotton waste. and keeps any of the filth absorbed by the cotton from coming in contact with the casing 1 and is sufficiently strong to retain its contentsand is inexpensive to reproduce.
The bottom of the bag 5 normally rests on the openable bottom 6, whereby the contents of thebag are supported by the bottom 6 of the casing.
The casing 1 being cylindrical in form and the bolt 9 being bowed about the axis of the casing as a center provides for a novel feature. It will be noted that upon the bolt being engaged to the eye of the bottom it is constrained against swinging and thereby holds the crank thereof against the side of the casing, and upon sliding the bolt to disengage same from the eye 7 of the bottom the bolt may be swung in the eyes secured to the casing permitting the crank to be swung outward to be used as a handle for tilting or inverting the casing. Thus, ordinarily the crank of the bolt is held against the casin and out of the way, whereas upon the bolt being slid to disengage the eye of the bottom when it is desired to invert the casing the bolt may be swung thus permitting the crank to be used as a handle.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a cylindrical casing, and a hinged bottom therefor, ofan up- 7 Standing eye at the free edge of the bottom adapted to project over the outside of the casing, apair of eyes mounted upon the easing, a bolt slidably mounted in the last mentioned eyes and adapted to be projected into the former eye when the bottom is closed, ing disengaged from the eye of the bottom the said bolt having a crankportion'between the same may be swung permitting the use the eyes on thecasing forminga handle and of the crank as a handle. limiting the longitudinal movement of the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 5 bolt and the said bolt also being bowed about my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature 15 the axis of the casing as a center, whereby in the presence of two witnesses.
upon the bolt being engaged to'the eye of LOUIS P. DORAIS. the bottom the bolt is constrained against Witnesses: swinging and the said crank is held against W. B. RIGBY,
10 the side of the casing and upon the bolt be- J. H. HUNTER.
