COLUMN-POLISHING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DELONA L. GALAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Lewis and State of \Vashington, have invented a new and useful Column-Polishing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in column polishing or sanding machines, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a device adapted to be mounted upon the carriage of a lathe and be disposed upon diametrically opposite sides of a col" umn mounted for rotation therein and comprising two adjustable members adapted to embrace said column during its rotation within the lathe and being moved longitudinally of the machine and upon the column so as to polish or sand the same.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a polishing 0r sanding device adapted to be carried by the carriage of a lathe and provided with adjustably mounted sand paper holding devices, whereby the sand paper is presented to the surface of the column and held taut during said sanding or polishing operation.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a sanding device adapted to be connected to the carriage of a lathe and provided with two coacting adjustable sand paper carrying members so disposed as to embrace the surface of the column upon diametrically opposite sides thereof and be held at the proper tension contact therewith during the passage of the carriage longitudinally of the lathe and during the rotation of the column in the lathe.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, itbeing understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates parallel plates of the lathe table provided with the usual carriage receiving grooves 2 for the reception of the carriage 3, as usual mounted thereon, for longitudinal movement.
Mounted upon and carried by the carriage is a block or plate 4, which is provided at its rear face with a bracket arm 5, whose lower end 6 is mounted in a groove 7 formed in the rear plate of the lathe table, said groove being so formed as to guide the table 4 so that the sanding members thereof will be guided according to the contour of the cylinder or column acted upon.
Carried by the block or table 4 at the forward and rear ends thereof, are the posts 8 and 8 respectively, which are connected together by means of the cylindrical rods 9 for the sliding reception of the post or standard 10, provided with the tool holding set screws 11, and is adjustable upon the rod 9 through the medium of the transversely operated feed screw 12 connected to said standard 10 and to the forward post or standard 8.
Transversely adjustable within the sliding standard or post 10 in the slot thereof, is the terminal arm 13, of the lower sanding member 14, said member being provided with the two eyed lugs or arms 15, and with the forward oppositely projecting arms 16, whose outer face 17 is in the form of a segment and is concentric with the circumference of the column 18, which as shown in Fig. 1 is mounted between the chucks of the lat-hes and rotatable therewith.
Removably journaled between the arms 15, is the spool 19, provided with the ratchet wheel or disk 20, whose teeth are adapted to be engaged by the spring pawl 21 mounted upon the member 14, so that the sand paper 22 mounted thereon and extending over the concaved surface 17 is held taut by means of said pawl and ratchet 20 and 21 and the set screw 23 mounted at the extreme underside of one of the arms 16, as clearly illus-' trated in Fig. 1. By this means the surface of the sand paper and action upon the column 18 is retained in the taut condition at all times, so that no Wrinkles in the paper and the surface 17 can be presented to the column 18.
Carried by the block or table 4 at the rear end thereof is an arm 24, which is connected at 25 to the lower free end of the spring terminal or member 26, of the upper sanding member of the device, this arm or member 26 being provided with the two eyed lugs or arms 27, with the curved surface portion 28 which is disposed substantially diametrically opposite the curved sur face 15 of the member 14 and rests in contact with the column 18 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Journaled between the arms 27 is the spool or reel 29, provided with the ratchet tooth disk 30 which is normally held at the proper adjustment by means of pawl 31 carried by the member 26, the strip of sandpaper 32 carried by said spool 29 having its terminal passed through the aperture 32 formed in the member 26 and held stretched across the concave surface 28 of said member 26 by means of the set screw 34 and the pawl and ratchet connection of the spool 29. By this means it will be seen that the sand paper and both members are properly supported in the desired position with relation to the column 18, so that the surface thereof is acted upon according to the contour thereof and that by the coaction of the two abrasive surfaces carried by the members, the surface of said column is properly polished.
Carried by the upper free end of the member 26 is an arm 35, upon whose ter minal 36 is adjustably mounted, the weight 37 the weight being so balanced as to normally hold the abrasive surface of the member 26 down and upon the surface of the column 18, and said weight may be of the proper size to render the device sensitive to different characters of wood to be operated upon, the said weight holding the arm in the operative position at all times to the circumference of the column 18.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that the member 14 may be adjusted within its standard 10 transversely toward and away from the column 18 conforming to the diameter of the column acted upon, and by reason of the feed screw 12, the operator may adjust the entire standard with the member 14 at will, toward and away from the column the same being guided in its transverse movement by means of the rod 9. It will also be noted that by means of the adjustable weight 37 different tensions, or a desired tension, may be given the member 26 so that its abrasive surface carried thereby may be adjusted for a deep or a thin out as may also be the case with the abrasive surface carried by the member 14. By constructing the parts as shown, said abrasive surfaces encompass the column at diametrically opposite points and being of the salne contour as the contacted portion of the column, the said column is acted upon during its rotation and as the main carriage 3 is moved longitudinally of the lathe, during its rotation, it is sanded or polished from one end to the other..
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a lathe, and a longitudinally traveling carriage thereon, of a transversely adjustable abrasive surface carrying member, and a spring tensionweighted adjustable abrasive member disposed oppositely thereto and carried by said carriage.
2. The combination with a. lathe, and a carriage thereon, of a transversely adjustable post mounted upon said carriage, an abrasive member adjustably carried in said post, and a spring tensioned abrasive member carried by the carriage and disposed oppositely to the adjustable abrasive member.
3. The combination with a lathe, and a carriage mounted thereon for longitui'linal movement, of a sanding device comprising two coacting adjustable members oppositely disposed and carried by the carriage of the lathe, means carried by said members for holding the abrasive surfaces thereof in operable relation to the work within the lathe.
4. A sanding device, having two members, each member having mounted thereon a spool carrying its individual strip of abrasive material, means for engaging and retaining the free end of said strip of abrasive material to its respective member, and means for engaging the spool to retain the abrasive strip taut from its retained free end to the spool.
5. A sanding device, comprising two coaeting members, each of said members being provided with a curved surface to conform to the circumference of the article operated upon, a spool rotatably mounted upon each member, a strip of abrasive material mounted upon said spool, a portion of said strip being disposed upon the curved surface of its respective member, means for connecting the free terminal of said strip to its respective member beyond the curved surface thereof, and coacting means carried by the member and the spool for retaining the strip of abrasive material taut from its retained free end to the spool.
6. Asanding device, comprising two members, one of said members being adjustable transversely with relation to the other, and the other member being fastened at its lower end and having an upper free end opposed to the abrasive end of the first member, an adjustable weight for adjusting the free end of the last mentioned member to and with relation to the column operated upon, a spool rotatably mounted upon each of said members, a strip of abrasive material carried by each spool, means for connecting the terminal of said strip to its respective member to dispose a portion thereof toward the Work operated upon, and coacting means carried by the member and the spool for holding the strip of abrasive material taut.
7. The combination with a carriage longitudinally disposed for traveling upon the lathe, and a lathe, of a sanding device comprising two coacting abrasive surface carrying members, one of said members being connected at its lower end and having a free upper terminal disposed for engagement with the work to be operated upon, a weight for adjusting the tension thereof toward and away from the Work, and means for transversely and adjustably connecting the other member to the carriage.
8. The combination with a lathe, and a longitudinally disposed carriage thereon, of a sanding device, consisting of two oppositely disposed members mounted bodily upon and carried by the carriage of the lathe, each member having a curved surface oppositely disposed to receive the work in the lathe, spools journaled in each member, a strip of abrasive material carried by the spool, and having a portion of its surface stretched across the curved surface of the respective member, means for holding the spool to retain the strip in a taut position, and means for adjusting one of said members transversely of the carriage with relation to the other member.
9. The combination with a lathe and the carriage thereof, of a block mounted upon said carriage, for transverse movement upon the carriage, coacting means carried by the block and the lathe for automatically actuating said transverse movement during the longitudinal movement of the carriage upon the lathe, a pair of coacting adjustable sanding devices bodily mounted upon said block and carried by the carriage, a pair of arms carried by each member a spool journaled therein, a strip of abrasive material carried by the spool, means for securing the terminals of the abrasive material to its respective members, and means for acting upon the spool to hold the strip of abrasive material taut.
10. A sanding device, comprising a transversely adjustable rigid abrasive carrying member, and a weight actuated ooacting cushionedly disposed abrasive surface carrying member.
