INVENTOR ATTORNEYS FERENCZ KovAcs, or HANNIBAL; MISSOURI.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 9, 1912.
Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 675,588.
To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERENCZ Koviios, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and my invention aims to provide a quick acting wrench having an adjustable jaw that can be positively locked in adjusted position whereby the aw cannot slip while the wrench is in use.
My invention further aims to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are easily and quickly assembled.
The invention still further aims to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, Fig. 2 is a similar view partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the wrench.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1 rectangular in cross section and having the outer end thereof provided with a fixed jaw 2, while the inner end of the shank has a detachable handle 3. The rear side of the shank 1 adjacent to the handle 3 has an enlargement 4 and the front side of the shank is provided with a bracket arm 5.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw 6 having a stem 7 engaging the front side of the shank and extending between said shank and the bracket arm The jaw 6 is retained in engagement with the shank 1 by a yoke 8 riveted or otherwise secured, as at 9 to the sides of the jaw.
The stem 7 of the aw has the front side thereof provided with a longitudinal groove 9' and the inner wall of said groove has ratchet teeth 10. The stem 7 is retained between the shank 1 and the bracket arm 5 by side straps 11 riveted or otherwise connected, as at 12 to the shank 1 and the bracket arm 5.
The inner side of the bracket arm 5 has a recess 13 and pivotally mounted in said recess by a pin 14: is the apertured lug 15 of a locking pawl 16. The inner end of the pawl is engaged by a flat spring 17 secured to the inner side of the arm 5, as at 18 and this spring retains the locking pawl normally out of engagement with the teeth 10 of the stem 7. The locking pawl 16 is within the groove 9 of the stem 7 and engaging the end of said pawl is a screw 19 having a knurled head 20, whereby said screw can be easily adjusted to shift the pawl 16 into engagement with the teeth 10 of the stem 7. The screw 19 is carried by the end of the arm 5 and by adjusting said screw the stem 7 can be locked relatively to the shank 1 to hold the jaw 6 in adjusted position.
What I claim is 1. A wrench comprising a shank, a fixed jaw carried by the outer end thereof, a handle carried by the inner end of said shank, a bracket arm carried by the front side of said shank, a aw slidably mounted upon the front side of said shank, a yoke carried by said jaw and embracing said shank, a stem carried by said jaw and extending between said shank and said bracket arm, said stem having a longitudinal groove in the front side thereof with the inner wall of said groove toothed, a locking pawl piv otally connected to said bracket arm and extending into the groove of said stem, a fiat spring connected to said bracket arm and engaging one end of said locking pawl for retaining said pawl normally out of engagement with said stem, and a screw arranged in the end of said bracket arm and adapted to be adjusted to shift said pawl into engagement with said stem and lock said stem relatively to said shank.
2. A wrench comprising a shank, a fixed jaw carried by the outer end thereof, a handle carried by the inner end of said shank, a bracket arm carried by the front side of said shank, a jaw slidably mounted upon the front side of said shank, a yoke carried by said jaw and embracing said shank, a stem carried by said jaw and extending between said shank and said bracket arm, said stem having a longitudinal groove in the front side thereof with the inner wall of said groove toothed, a locking pawl pivotally connected to said bracket arm and extending into the groove of said stem, a flat spring connected to said bracket arm and engaging one end of said locking pawl for retaining said pawl normally out of engagement with said stem, a screw arranged in the end of said bracket arm and adapted to be adjusted to shift said pawl into engagement With said stem and lock said stein relatively to said shank, and straps secured to the sides of said shank and said bracket arm for guiding said stem between said shank and said bracketarm.
In testimony whereof I a HiX my signature 1n the presence of two \vltnesses.
