UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. BREWSTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BURGLAR-ALARM ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BREW- STER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a convenient attachment for insertion between the sashes of a window or between doors and frames therefor and other closure members and the frames for the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simplified, economical and easily transported construction for a device of the character mentioned.
IVith these objects in view the invention consists in forming, of spring metal, a small contact plate and a spring contacting tongue therefor projected from the side of the plate to form a frictional engaging member to hold the sash or door for which it is provided, said tongue being adapted to close upon the plate to form electrical cont-act therewith and with a terminal plate carried thereon and insulated therefrom.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is an edge View of a circuit making attachment of the character named; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end View of the same; and Fig. 4 is a view depicting the manner of employing the attachment.
The attachment illustrated in the accompanying drawings is employed in conjunction with a suitable supply for electric current, such as a battery or dynamo.
On the local service in which is incor porated the device illustrated in the drawings is installed an alarm bell or other acoustic alarm, operable by means of an electric current. The circuit is completed through the device when the tongue 9 is permitted to rest upon the terminal plate 10. The plate 10 rests upon a cross bar 11 which structurally unites the bracketed extensions 12 of the body plate 13. The body plate 13, the tongue 9 and the extensions 12 are constructed Specification of Letters Patent.

from the same piece of material, the nature of the material being resilient. The tongue 9 is set to the shape shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The end 1 1 of the tongue is extended above the curved body 15, and has formed thereon a hook 16. It is the end of the hook 16 that rests upon the plate 10 in its normal position.
The attachment is provided with the terminal binding posts 17 and 18. The post 17 is extended through perforations provided in the plate 10, the cross bar 11 and the washer plate 19, being adapted to clamp the mentioned parts in structurally fixed relation. Between the plate 10 and cross bar 11 is inserted an insulating pad 20, and between the washer plate 19 and the cross bar 11 is inserted an insulating pad 21. The binding post 18 is secured directly and electrically with the bar 11 and extensions 12.
When installing the device for operation one of the connecting pins 22, 23 is withdrawn from engagement with the binding screws 24, 25 respectively. The pins 22 and 23 are fixedly connected with the circuit branches 26 and 27, connected with the electric source above mentioned, and forming part of the circuit incorporating the acoustic alarm.
After the attachment is installed in operative position, by forcing the body plate 13 between the parting rails of a window sash, or between the edge of a closed door and the frame thereof, which action removes the end of the hook 16 from contact with the plate 10, then the pins 22, 23 are placed within the sockets provided in the binding posts 17 and 18 and the screws 24 and 25 respectively set up to hold the said pins. If the electric source be provided with a main line switch, this is then closed and the attachment and alarm are in operative position.
It will be seen that should the wood sashes be disturbed sufliciently to part the same to allow the resiliency of the tongue 9 to force the end of the hook 16 upon the plate 10, the electric circuit controlling or actuating the acoustic alarm would be thereby closed and the alarm sounded. The attacl1 ment being installed in the manner described it is evident that the dislodgment of the same would result in the same effect.
It is evident that the possibilities of constructing the attachment in a diminutive form reside in the present invention, and
that the facility thus offered for carrying the attachment renders it possible for a traveler to install the attachment in a hotel room or other location where he temporarily resides.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. As an article of manufacture, a burglar alarm attachment having a. body portion provided with a resilient tongue; a binding post electrically connected with said body portion; a terminal contact mounted upon said body portion and insulated there from; a binding post electrically connected with said terminal contact; and a resilient member fixedly connected with said body portion adapted to normally rest upon said terminal contact and to be moved therefrom when said attachment is forced be tween adjacent members.
2. As an article of manufacture, a burglar alarm attachment having a body portion provided with three parallel extensions, the central one of said extensions being set to a shape having a portion extended beyond the side of said body portion; a contactplate mounted upon one of the side extensions of said body portion and insulated therefrom, said plate being extended into the path of to form a rest for said central extension; and a plurality of binding posts, one connected with said contact plate and the other with the opposite side extension of said body portion In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
