1911. Serial No. 616,467.
ln the upper portion of the rear piece 2 70 are formed e series of Ventilating openings 9, seid openings being preferably formed by semi-circuler slits cutin the rear Vpiece as shown 1 The part of the metal-Within the semi-circuler slits is struck or bent out- 75 Wardly to' form guards or shields 10 for the openings 9;
ln the front end l oi the box is formed a adapted to be closed by e slide ly end hingedly mounted doo'i` ay dat metal plete having its upper end bent to form an elongated loop 13 extendin entirely across the Width of the doonslgebly end hingedly mounted on extract: bar le having its ends bent ng5 wardly 'end inserted throuvh e erturesn the front of the coop sind then bent down- `werdly and clenched against-fthe nner'side of the end as shown. Bythus attaching the door it may be moved 'laterally across the front end of 'the coop toeither end of the track bar thus partly opening' the doorway at either side, 'the lower en of the door enge ing in a space between the front l` and the ront ange 22 of the bottom 3` By 95 thus arranging the door it may-also be swung upwardly to a full open position' as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. To open the door tothe dotted line position of the y Fig. 3, it .is irstmased until the trck bar 100` 14 is lufthe lower part ofV the bearing loop 13, then/the lower end of the door is moved outward beyond the flange `of the bottom 3, then dropped and swungyoutwerdly and up..-
wrdly, with the track ber in the \upper,1o5
portion ofthe loop as apwot, until e ver-. tical position'isreeched,A4 whenthe door is dotted. line osition of Eig. 3, in which position` vthe oop in its reversed position' will revent accidental 110 felling 'enclosing of thewitoor end zjmly lock it iii-'its open position. When it iedesire o close the door, it is again raised to the limit of the loop 13, swung outwardly and downwardly to a4 position outside the flange ot' the bottom, raised again above the flange, pressed inward, and dropped behind the flange. The door 12 may be provided with Ventilating openings 4l5, and a suitable handle '16. i
rlhe top l and'sides 5 are formed from a single sheet of' metal comprising straight sides and bent or curved top. ln the curved upper edge of the front and rear ends of the coop and in said curved top piece are formed transversely disposed groo'ves 17 which are adapted to receive the upper curved edges of the ends 2 and 3 of the coop. ln the center ot the top piece 'adjacent to its ends are formed slots 18 with which are engaged the lugs 7 torined on the trout and rear ends whereby the upper portions of said ends are secured to the top. 'lhe front and rear edges ot the metal forniing the edge ot' thcftop piece 4 are beaded or folded back upon themselves to provide a smooth finish for the ends and to reinforce the same.
On the ends of the side-pieces 5 are termed right angular locking flanges 1S) which are adaptedA to bc slidably engaged with the guide channels (i on the ends of thel end pieces l and 2 whereby said. sides and ends are locked together to form the corners of the coop. ()n the lower edges of the sides 5 are formed laterally and outwardly projecting locking llanges 2() to which are se` cured the llangcd edges of the bottoni hereinat'ter described.
Tl bottoni 3 has its side edges bent down wai-elly and laterally to Yforni offset right angular locking flanges 2l. '.lhe ends of the bottom are bent downwardly to form supporting langes said llauges being bent outwardly and upwardlyto torni channels 23 with which are engaged the lower edges of the :front and rear end pieces ot' lhccoop. lVith the channel thus toi-med on the front end of the bottoni is also engaged the lower end of the door l2 when the latter is in a closed or partly closed position. By thus engaging the lower end ot the door wit-h said channel said lower end of the door will be slidably secured and prevented from being swung upwardly lo an open position, until lifted bodily to a sullieicnt height to discngage the lower edge lhereot' 'from the channel. When thus constructed the bottom is adapted to be inserted between the sides and ends ot the coop and by means ol the ollsedt [langes 2l and 22 will be elevated in the coop above the sui-fare ot' the grouiul. When thus arrangeil the right angularly laterally })rojecting portions of the side anges 21 will lit under and support the langes 20 on the lower edges ol the sides 5 when sides and bottoni may be. secured to gether by locking members 23, said members 23 comprising metal strips bent inwardly along one edge to form a channel 24 adapted to be slipped over the flanges 20 and 21 of the side and bottom. The opposite edges of the strips are bent at right angles to form stop anges 25 which when the channels 24 are engaged with the flanges 20 and 2l will closely engage or fit against the inner sides of the Vertical portions of the flanges 21 on the side edges of the bottoni as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of' the drawings, and thebottom 3 will rest on the upper edges thereof.
When the locking'members 23 are thus en gaged with the flanges on the adjacent edges of 'the sides, and the bottom, these parts will be securely fastened together and the lianges 22 on the ends of the bottom will securely hold the ends of the coop in place. By thus arranging the parts it 1will be seen that the entire coop will b e firmly secured together and cannot be separated until the 'evo locking members 23 are first lremoved after which the various other parts of the coop maybe readily disassembled and nested to gether to form a small package.
. 'lo the curved top piece 4 of the coop is i preferably secured a suitable handle 26 whereby the coop may be readily lifted and kmoved from place to place. l
description taken in From the foregoing connection with the accompanying drawings the consti-notion and loperation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more. extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may.
be resortedto Without departing -from the principle or sacrilicing any of the advarr.
tages of the invention as defined in the appe-nded claims.
Having thus I claim is 1. 2. A knocledown chicken coop comprising a bottom provided on its ends with flanges', extending downwardly and then upwardly to f orin supports for the bottom and channels outside otfsaidA supports, ends flange seated in said channels, one'of the endsllavn ing a doorway, a horizontal track bar secured to and spaced away from the front face of the end piece above the doorway and extending beyond thesides thereof, and a door provided with a horizontal, vertically elongated loop embracing said track bar and slidable laterally and vertically thereon, the bott-om of the door when closed or laterally opened, resting in the channel of the bottom 3. A knock-down chicken coop comprising a bottom provided on its ends with {langes, extending downwardly and then upwardly to form supports for the bottom and channels outside of' said supports, ends Y vseated in said channels, oneof the ends-having a4 doorway, and a' door mounted to swing outward, move vertically and slide laterally before said doorway', the lower edge of the door resting when closed in the channel between the flanges 4of the bottom;
4. A knock down chicken coop comprisino Y front and rear end pieces, combined top the door whereby the latter is slidably and pivot'ally supported at its upper end and may be slipped laterally to a partly open position whereby the door will be supported when swung upwardly to an open position, and meansto hold the lower edge of the door in its closed vand part-ly open posit-ions.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
