Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Side-Dump Body, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to side dump bodies for wagons and similar vehicles, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a vertically adjustable body having its bottom formed of downwardly converging portions and an intermediate flat portion, there being outlet openings at the sides of said intermediate portion through either of which the contents of the body may be discharged.
A further object is to provide a novel arrangement of body and supporting structure whereby a chute may be stored beneath the body when not in use and can be extended to either side of the body to receive the material discharged from either of the outlet openings.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of the body with parts in section and parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the body and the supporting mechanism.
The body 1 is provided at its bottom and approximately midway between its ends 7 with a flat bottom section 2 which rests upon supporting beams 3. The beams 3 are located above a main frame 4 and are arranged to move vertically with relation to the same. The beams 3 at the opposite sides of the body 1 are connected together at their ends by means of cross beams 5 and vertical standards 6 are mounted at their lower ends upon the frame 4. Cross bars 7 connect the upper ends of the standards 6 at the opposite sides of the body 1 together. Screw shafts 8 are journaled at their lower ends in the frame and at their upper ends in the cross bars 7. Worm wheels. 9 are fixed to the lower ends of the screw shafts 8 and mesh with worms 10 carried by a shaft 11 which is journaled in the frame. The said shaft 11 is provided at one end with a crank handle 12. Therefore it will be seen that when the shaft 11 is rotated by the crank handle 12 that the worms 10 will rotate the worm wheels 9 and the screw shafts 8 will be rotated. The said shafts 8 are threaded through apertures provided in the cross beams 5 and consequently the said beams 5 will be raised or lowered which will carry with them the beam 3 which latter beams will raise or lower the body 1. The flat portion of the bottom of the body 1 is provided at its ends and at points beyond the beams 3 with openings 13. Lips 14 are secured to the bottom portion of the body 1 and lie under the said openings 13 in the bot-tom of the body. Vertically slidable gates 15 are located at the delivery ends of the lips 14 and normally close the passageway through the end portions of the said lips. Brace plates 16 are secured at their lower portions to the sides of the frame and at their upper end portions to the standards 6. The sald plates 16 are provided with downwardly and inwardly inclined upper edges 17 which serve in part as supports for the end portions of the body 1 when the said body is lowered between the standards 6. The inner ends of the plates 16 at one end of the frame are spaced from the inner ends of the plates 16 at the opposite end thereof and the said space serves as clearance in which may be located a chute spout 18 which will be positioned upon the upper intermediate side portions of the frame and below the flat portion 2 of the bottom of the body 1 and between the lips 14 at the opposite sides of the said body 1.
In operation when it is desired that the body 1 shall be emptied of a load and the said material is to be conveyed to one side or the other of the said body for some distance; the said body is elevated to approximately the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. As has been hereinbefore explained this is accomplished by manipulating the shaft 11 and its attached parts. The chute 18 is then connected with one of the lips 14 in any usual or approved manner and the gate 15 of that lip is opened. The material is then free to gravitate from the interior of the body 1 through the opening 13 along the terial will gravitate through the opening 13 in the manner as above described. After the body has been relieved of its contents as indicated it is again lowered into its normal position resting at the inclined portions of its bottom upon the inclined edges 17 of the plates 16 and resting at the intermediate flat portion 2 of its bottom upon the side beams 3.
The particular construction of body set forth results in a considerable saving in. weight and cost as compared with other bodies now produced. It has been found that the actual weight of the body is approximately about one fourth less than that of other types of bodies used for the same purposes and that said body can be produced at about one third less cost than any other types of devices of this character.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is;
l. The combination with a vehicle frame and connected side beams adjustable relative thereto and supported thereabove, of a body having its body formed with a flat intermediate portion and converging end portions, said intermediate portion bearing on the side beams and having outlet openings at points beyond the side beams, lips supported entirely beyond the side beams and extending under said apertured portions of the bottom to receive material discharged through the outlet openings, means for con trolling the discharge of material from the lips, there being a chute receiving space between the frame and the body, and a chute removably seated within said space and extending transversely of the frame, said lips constituting means for retaining the chute against longitudinal displacement while the body is in lowered position.
2. The combination with a vehicle frame and side beams spaced therefrom and adjustable relative thereto, of a body having its bottom formed with a fiat intermediate portion and downwardly converging end portions, said intermediate portion bearing downwardly upon the side beams, supporting plates arranged in pairs at each side of the frame and secured to said frame, the plates of each pair being spaced apart and having downwardly converging upper edges constituting bearings for the inclined portions of the bottom of the body, there being a transversely extending chute receiving space between the frame and the side beams and below the body and between the inner or small ends of the supporting plates, a chute removably mounted within said space and. extending transversely of the frame, and means on the body for holding the chute against longitudinal displacement when the body is in lowered position.
3. The combination with a vehicle frame and side beams spaced therefrom and adjustable relative thereto, of abody having its bottom formed with a fiat intermediate portion and downwardly converging end portions, there being outlet openings within said intermediate portion and beyond the side beams, lips connected to said intermediate portion and supported entirely beyond the side beams, said lips extending under the outlet openings, means for controlling the discharge of material from the lips, 'and means for raising and lowering the body with the side beams, there being a transversely extending chute receiving space between said beams and the frame, between the lips and below the intermediate portion of the body, said lips constituting means for holding the chute against longitudinal displacement within said space.
