DONALD W. MATHESON, OF YORKTON, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
TELESCOPIC GUN-SIGHT ATTACHMENT.
Application filed September 18, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD WV. Marimson, a subject of the King of England, residing at Yorkton, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescopic Gun- Sight Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to telescopic gun sight attachments.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment of the character named which may be easily and quickly associated with a rifle, and when so associated may be easily adjusted so as to obtain the proper focus upon objects located at great distances and thereby aid the gunner in sighting and aiming.
' WVith the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary rifle partly broken away with the improved attachments associated therewith. Fig. 2, a plan view of a part of What is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 8, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, a fragmental detail perspective view of the attachment, and Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of one of the removable lenses and its holder.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates the barrel of the rifle which supports the usual front and rear sights 11 and 12 respectively.
The attachment comprises a pair of tubular telescoping sections A and B, the lat ter of which is disposed within the former and positioned substantially at the forward end of the barrel, while the former is located at substantially the rear end of the barrel. The lower side of the section A is shaped so as to snugly rest upon the barrel Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Serial No. 649,805.
10 and is slidably secured to said barrel by 2 means of bands 13 and 14 attached to said section at its ends respectively and surrounding the barrel. The lower side of the section A is provided with a longitudinal slot 15 through which the sight 12 projects. By reason of this slot the section A can be moved longitudinally of the barrel without interference from the sight 12. The section B has its inner end slidably disposed in the section A and its outer end secured to the barrel 10 by means of a band 16. Preferably this band is secured tight enough upon the barrel 10 to hold the section B against movement relatively to the barrel, the focus of the attachment being accomplished by the movement of the section A. The section B is provided in its lower side with an opening 17 through which the forward sight 11 projects. The section A is provided in its upper portion near its rear end with a transverse slot 18, while a corresponding slot 19 is formed in the section B near its outer end. Removably inserted in the slots 18 and 19 are holders 20 and 21 respectively each of which carries a lens 22. The lens holders 20 and 21 are held against removal from the slots 18 and 19 respectively by means of covers 23 and 2 1. The cover 23 is hinged to the section A and is adapted to swing so as to overlie the slot 18, the free end of said cover being detachably secured to the section A as at 25. Likewise the cover 2% is hinged to the section B and is adapted to be swung so as to overlie the slot 21.. The free end of this cover is adapted to be secured to the section B as at 26. It will thus be apparent that by the manipulation of the covers 23 and 24; the holders 2() and 21 may be readily secured against removal from respective slots 18 and 19.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that there has been provided a very simple telescopic gun sight attachment which will efficiently perform the purposes for which it is intended and which can be easily and quickly attached to an ordinary rifle without necessitating the removal or alteration of any of the parts of the latter.
What is claimed, is
A telescopic gun sight attachment for rifles comprising a pair of telescoping sections provided with means for attachment to a gun barrel adapted to permit longitudi- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signanal movement of one section relatively to ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
the other, said sections bein rovided with T elongated openings to I'QCQlX G the front and DONALD MATHESOB' rear sights of the gun respectively, and a lVitnesses:
lens reinovably mounted in the outer end of H. A. VvI-IITMAN,
each of said sections. WM. J. MCDONALD.
