Description

J. J D-UPFIE. VACUUM CLEANER.
APPLIOATIOI' FILED 10V. 6, 1909.
- I Patented Mal-.26, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
, UNITED STATES PATENT QF IoE- JOHN afnurrm, or sAN FRANCISCO, oamroama.
VACUUM-CLEANER.
' Be it known that I, JOHN J. D FFIE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
' 369 Market street, San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Vacuum-Cleaner, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to conor examined when so desired.
Another object ofthe invention is to produce amachine which may be used for the purpose of blowing the dust out of corners, or for other like purposes when desired,-a special attachment making possible the utilization of the air current either as a blast or as suction at the will of the person using the same.
In thedrawings in whichthe same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a vertical'sectional view through the casing of the machine showing its interior construction, 'F-ig. .2 is a view of a hose attachment used for the purpose of attaching to the casing of the machine when the air blast is to be used, Fig. 3 is a view of one of the fans used, and Fig. 4 is a detail View showing the manner of securing the dust collecting bag in the top of the casing.
The numeral 1 the machine which ma be of any desired shape, as square or cylindrical, said casing having rubber feet 2 at the bottom thereof to prevent it from marring polished floors. In the bottom of the casing there is a motor M which is centrally placed with respect to said bottom, there being partitions 3 on each side of the motor to confine the air in the desired mannerL' Each partition has ahole 4 therein adjacent the ends of the motor shaft, and a short inclined floor 5 is connected with one of said partitions for I Specification of Letters latent. Patented Application filed November 6, 1909.- Serial No. 36,548.

the'purpose of preventing any dirt from accumulating in the base of the machine.
The motor is provided with a horizontal shaft 6 on each end of which is a fan 8. It will be noted that the blades of each fan are adjacent their respective partitions, while the disks 7 thereof are the width of the fan blade awaytherefrom, the. object being to provide means whereby the vacuum produced may be increased, since one fan takes the air from the dust collectingbag and delivers it to the intake of the second fan, thus increasing the amount of air moved since one fan worksiagainst a lower pressure than it otherwise would. In or- I der that the air may be confined at the top of the motor in the proper manner a hori- Zontal partition 9 fits tightly in the casing, said partition having small angle plates 10 secured thereto and having packing 11 between said plates whereby an air. tight fit is secured. In order that the partition '9 may be removed from the machine for inspectionthereof itis provided with a bandle l2.
. The upper portion of the machine is for the-collection of-the dust and dirt which is taken from the floor by the machine when the same is used. Inthe' upper part of the casing there is placed a wire basket 13 which rests on the top of the handle 12 and on brackets 14 at the sides of the casing near the top thereof. This basket is for the purpose of holding the dust collecting sack 15 away from the sides of-the casin so that it will at all times be free to disc arge the air while preventing the discharge of dust therethrough. The sack has its upper edges secured to a hoop 16, which fits tlghtly in the'casing and prevents the air from passing to the fans except'through the body.0f
the sack.
in the top of the casingand is held therein. simply by frictionthereon and it is provided at the center thereof with an inlet pipe 18, covered with a glass dome 19, said dome bein for the purpose of examining the incoming dust laden air to see when the cleaning operation vhasbeen completed. A hose 120 is secured in the open end of'the inlet pipe and suitable tools are used for the collection of dust and dirt from all places, as carpets, drapery, etc.
that the machine may be easily carried from The cover 17 of the machine fits tightly,
In order stantially as described.
place to place it is provided with a bail 21 having a handle 22 thereon.
Since it frequently happens that persons wish to use the machine as a blowing ma chine instead of as a suction cleaning machine a fitting 23 is provided which screws into a bushing 24 in the side of the machine in front of the secondary fan, a hose 25 being attached to the said nozzle and being of any desired length. I
Having thus described my invention What Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a vacuum cleaner, a casing, a motor in said casing, a shaft operated by said motor, a fan on each end of said motor shaft, a partition adjacent each fan, a removable diaphragm in said casing, and adapted to form airtight joints with said partitions, a cover for said casing, and an air and dust inlet pipe in said cover, sub- 2. In a vacuum cleaner, a casing, a motor in said casing, a shaft operated'by said motor, a fan on each end of the motor shaft, a partition adjacent each'fan, a diaphragm 1n said casing adapted to form airtight joints'with the said partitions, a cover for said casing, and an air and dust inlet pipe in said cover, substantiallyas set forth.
3. In a vacuum cleaner, a casing, a" motor therein, a shaft operated by the motor, a plurality of fans on said motor shaft, one of said fans having its intake connected with the upperportion of the casing and discharging into the intake of another of said fans, a removable partition above said motor and fans separating them from the intake chamber, a removable cover for the casing forming a compartment in the upper portion thereof, and an air and dust inlet pipe into said compartment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of October, A D. 1909 in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
JOHN J. DUFFIE.
