FEE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 27, 1911.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Serial No. 657,079.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC M. EDMUND- SON, citizenv of the United States of Amer-- ica, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a wrench with an adjustable jaw that can be easily and quickly adjusted relatively to a fixed jaw for clamping pipes of cylindrical surfaces, without danger of the wrench slipping while a pipe or structure having a cylindrical surface is being ro-- tated by the wrench.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pipe wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are easily and quickly assembled to provide a strong and durable structure.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifi-' cally described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a port-ion of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are elevations of portions of the wrench showing the manner of adjusting the movable of the wrench.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a bar rectangular in cross section and having the inner end thereof reduced to provide a handle 2. The outer end of the bar has a face thereof provided with transverse gripping teeth 3 and cooperating with these teeth in gripping a pipe or curved surface are the transverse teeth 4 of an adjustable jaw 5. Pivotally connected to the sides of the jaw 5 by pins 6 are sets of arms 7 that are adjustably connected to the bar 1. The arms 7 are provided with longitudinal slots'S and said slots, at equally spaced points, have the confronting walls thereof provided with diametrically opposed recesses 9. These recesses represent oppositely disposed walls of openings, and the slots 8 terminate in openings 10 corresponding in diameter to openings having walls formed by the recesses: 9.
Detachably mounted in the sides of the bar 1 are screws 11 having diametrically opposed flat, faces 12 adapted to engage the walls of the slots 8. The outer ends of the screws 11 have heads 13- retaining the arms 7 in engagement with the bar 1. The screws 11 are fixed relatively to the bar 1 and by shifting the arms 7 said arms can be adjusted upon the screws 11. For instance, with the arms 7 in the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the fiat faces 12 of the screws 11 confront the walls of the slots 8, permitting of said arms being shifted upon the screws, but when the arms are swung to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the screws engage in the oppositely disposed recesses 9 and lock the arms relatively to the bar 1. i
From the foregoing it will be observed that itis only necessary to shift the jaw 5 and the sets of arms thereof in order to adjust said arms relatively to the bar 1. After the jaw 5 has been set or adjusted relatively to the bar 1, said bar can be used for obtaining sufiicient leverage to clamp the toothed end of the bar and the toothed end of the jaw 5 upon a pipe for rotating the same.
The wrench in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal and of various sizes.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a bar having a handle at the inner end thereof, and the outer end thereof toothed, a aw having the outer end thereof toothed and confronting the toothed end of said bar, sets of arms pivotally connected to the sides of said jaw, said arms having longitudinal slots formed therein with the ends of said slots tcrminating in openings and the walls of said slots provided with oppositely disposed recesses, and pins mounted in the sides of said bar and extending through the slots of said arms, said pins corresponding in diameter In testimony whereof I aflix my signature to the diameter of the recesses and openings 1n the presence of tWo wltnesses.
of said arms and having flat faces ada ted to confront the Walls of the slots of said ISAAC EDMUNDSON' arms whereby said arms can be shifted upon Witnesses:
said pins and moved to 100k said arms rela- ANNIE M. EDMUNDsoN,
tively to said pins. MAX H. SRoLovrrz,
