INVENTOR.
WNTTED @TATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON KRZAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOX.
oraaeo.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON KRZAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to boxes, and the object of the invention is to provide a box with a secret lock, which prevents the lid of the box being opened by unscrupulous persons.
My invention aims to provide a box or receptacle that can be advantageously used for the housing of valuables, and in connection with the lid of the box there is a lock that does not require a key or detachable actuating device. The lock is concealed and cannot be tampered with.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box with the lid partially opened. Fig. 2 is a plan of the box partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view of a part of the rear end of the box body and the lid sections showing the locking disk shifted to position to permit shifting of the box lid to open position.
A box in accordance with this invention comprises a rectangular wood or metal body 1 which is provided with a large rectangular recess 2 adapted to be lined with felt or other material 3. The lined recess 2 is adapted to receive the matter to be inclosed by the box, and the forward end of the body 1 is provided with a central verti- I cal dove-tail tongue 4 the object of which will presently appear. The rear wall of the box is of a greater thickness than the front wall and is provided with a vertical screw 5 having a head 6.
Movably mounted upon the upper edges of the body 1 is a lid, comprising three sections, a bottom section 7 an intermediate section 8, and a top section 9, the sections 7, 8 and 9 being glued together.
The section 8 is flush at its forward end with the forward ends of the sections 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

and 9, and said section 8 is of less length than either of the other sections thereby providing the rear end of the lid with a pocket 12 to provide clearance and permit the movement of a pivoted releasing member or slide 13. The normal position of the member or slide 13 is such that its rear end will be flush with the rear end of the box, and its longitudinal side edges flush with the sides of the box and the sides of the lid.
The section 7 near its rear end is formed with a longitudinally extending slot 10 and such section 7 in its upper face near its rear 11 the slot 10 being made through the bottom of said recess. posite sides of the recess 11, the walls of the recess are formed with inclines 11 see Figs. 2 and 4t, so that said recess longitudinally of the member 7 has a diameter greater than the diameter of the recess transversely of said member 7 for a purpose as will hereinafter more fully appear. The length of the slot 10 is substantially equal to that of the greatest diameter of the recess 11. Registering with the recess 11 is a some what oval-shaped recess 14 formed in the lower face of the slide 13 near the rear of the latter. The length of the recess 141 is substantially equal to that of the greatest diameter of the recess 11 but the width of such recess 1 1- is less than the greatest diameter of the recess 11. Snugly engaging with the walls of the recess 14 and of a thickness so as to extend into the recess 11 is a locking disk 16, which is of a somewhat elliptical or oval-shaped. contour as shown in Fig. 2, conforming to the contour of the recess 1 1.
The screw 5 extends through the slide 13, through an opening 15 in the slide 13, through an opening provided therefor in the disk 16, and through the slot 10 and engages in the box body as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The head 6 of the screw is received in a recess 17 formed in the lower face of the section 9 near the rear thereof. The recess 17 and slot 10 in connection with the size of the recess 11 with respect to the disk 16 enable the longitudinal shifting of the lid to open and close the same when the slide 13 and disk 16 have been adjusted when the slide is shifted. Normally the disk 16 extends longitudinally with respect to the lid but when shifted by the slide On diametrically op- -5 as is obvious.
, the latter cannot be shifted longitudinally or swung upon its pivot, the latter being the screw 5. It will be assumed that the elements of the lid are in the position as shown in longitudinal section in Fig. 3 and as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 2. The lid is locked when the parts are in the posit-ion as stated.
To open the lid, the slide 13 is shifted to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2
,.which may be accomplished by pressing inwardly on the shorter longitudinal edge of .engaged by the fingers so that said slide can be easily swung around to said dotted line position. The slide in its movement carries the disk 16 therewith, by reason of said disk being somewhat elliptical in contour as shown in Fig. 2, and the recess 14 conforming in contour substantially to that of the disk. As the slide and disk are moved as above described, the ends of the disk engage on the inclines 11 at opposite sides of the recess 11, and the disk is elevated as it is turned until it lies wholly within the recess 14 with its lower edge flush with the upper face of member 7, as shown in Fig. 4. With the disk in this position, clear of the recess 11, the lid can be pushed bodily toward the rear end of the box, the screw 5 riding in the slot 10 and the head 6 of the screw riding in recess 17. Where the lid has been pushed rearward sufficiently far to disengage the tongue 4 from the socket 18 in the front end of the lid, the latter may then be swung around to either side of the box body, the screw 6 acting as the pivot for the lid in such swinging movement.
When it is desired to again close the box and lock the lid, the latter comprising members 7, 8 and 9 is returned to position over the box with the socket 18 alining with tongue 4. Said members can then be shoved toward the forward end of the box so as to engage the tongue 4 in the socket 18, the screw 5 again riding in slot 10 and the head 6 of the screw again riding in recess 14. The slide 13 is then returned to its position between members 7 and 9 of the lid, and in this return movement carries the disk 16 with it so that said disk is again positioned to drop into the recess 11 and lock the lid.
WVhat I claim is 1. A box comprising a body-portion, a lid having one end provided with a pocket, a recess, and a slot communicating with the recess, a pivot for the lid extending through said slot, recess and pocket, a slide mounted in said pocket and through which extends said pivot, a disk carried by the slide and extending in said recess, the size of said recess with respect to said disk being such as to permit of the lid shifting longitudinally when the disk is swung a quarter revolution within said recess, and means engaging with said lid to prevent shifting of the latter until the disk has been swung a quarter revolution.
2. A box comprising a body-portion, a lid mounted thereon and having one end provided with a pocket, a recess, and a longitudinal slot communicating with said recess, a pivot for the lid extending through said slot, recess and pocket, shiftable means mounted in said pocket and through which said pivot extends and adapted when shifted in one direction to permit of moving the lid longitudinally to released position, and means engaging with the lid to prevent moving of the lid to open position until the means within the pocket has been shifted.
3. A box comprising a body, a lid provided with a longitudinal slot and a recess at one end, a pivot for the lid extending through said slot and recess, a slide mounted upon said pivot and arranged within said lid and provided with a locking element extending in said recess, said element capable of being shifted to permit of the lid being moved longitudinally upon its pivot, and means engaging with the lid to prevent the swinging thereof upon its pivot until longitudinal movement of the lid is had by shifting said element in one direction.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANTON KRZAN.
