To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE G. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wood Lynne, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a speoification.

My invention relates to improvements in baskets, and more particularly to baskets designed for carrying coal and the like, which must embody a maximum of strength and durability.

A further object is to improve upon the construction set forth in my Patent No. 955,824 granted to me April 19, 1910.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in vertical section on the line 11, of Fig. 3. Fig. 2, is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3, is a top plan view, and Fig. 4:, is a bottom plan view.

1, represents the basket proper which is preferably of cane or wicker, having heavy bands 2 around its upper edge, which bands are secured at opposite sides of the basket, and the latter is cut out at opposite sides as shown at 3, so that bands 2 at their points form hand-holds A to facilitate the manipulation of the basket.

The bottom 5 of the basket extends upwardly from its outer edge to its center, so that it gives an arched support for the heavy weight in the basket, thus giving to the structure the maximum of strength in the bottom. To further strengthen the basket 3, strips of spring metal 6, 7, and 8 are provided. The strips 6 and 7 cross each other intermediate of their ends below the bottom 5, and the strip 8 is positioned across the upper face of the bottom 5. These strips 6, 7 and 8 are secured together at a central point by means of a single rivet 9. The 1ntermediate portions of strips 6, 7 and 8, are bent so as to snugly fit against the upper and lower faces of the bottom respectively, and the ends of strips 6 and 7, extend up the outside of body 1, and are bent over strips 2, and each bent end riveted to the main body of the strip by rivets 10. The

respective ends of strip 8 extend up the inner face of the body 1, and are bent over the upper edge of the body, between the strips 2, and securely held by said strips as shown.

By arranging the two strips 6 and 7 on the outside of the basket, and the strip 8 on the inside of the basket, the arched bottom 5 is protected and strengthened in a very essential way. Not only does the elasticity of the spring strips return the bottom to normal position in the event of a blow or excessive weight, but they hold the wicker or material of the basket in fixed relationship, so that they prevent any separation due to expansion and contraction when the wicker is wet and dry, and they serve largely to sustain the wear which comes on the bottom edge of the basket.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A woven basket comprising a body having an upwardly projecting arched bottom, two metal strips at their intermediate portions crossed, and fitting snugly against the lower face of the bottom, and conforming to the shape of the bottom, a third metal strip positioned across the upper face of the bottom and at an angle to the firstunent-ioned strips, a rivet projected through the bottom at its center, and through all of said metal strips securing them together, said outside strips extending up the outer face of the body, bent over the top of the body, and secured upon themselves, and the ends of said inner strip extending up the inner face of the body, and bent outwardly over the upper edge of the body, substantially as described.

2. A basket having an arched bottom, and straight side walls, crossed metal straps located against the under face of the bottom crossing at the center of the bottom and secured at their ends in the side wall, a third metal strip located on the upper face of the bottom, crossing the bottom at its center in line with the point of crossing of the In testimony whereof I have signed my two strips below a single securing device name to this specification in the presence of projecting through the center of the bottom two subscribing Witnesses.
