Be it known,that I, Mines H. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVebster Groves,l\lissouii, have inventedpa certain new and useful Improvement. iu Wire-Cutters, ot which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire-cutters, and particularly to wire-cutters ot', the type in which two pivotally connected members provided with cooperating wire-receiving vnotches are adapted to be moved relatively to each other so to cause the cutting edges on said notches to shear ott' the wire.
The object ot'. my invention is to provide means of novel construction tor limiting the opening movement of the members ot a wirecutter ot' the type referred to so as to bring the cooperating wire-receiving notches in said members into perfect registration or alinement.
I have herein shown my invention embodied in a combined pliers and wire-cutter but I do not wish it to be understood kthat my invention is limited to such a tool for the invent-ion is applicable to any wirecutter that comprises two pivotally connected members which have cooperating wirr receiving notches.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates two pivotally connected members, each ot which comprises a handle, a jaw, and a disk-shaped portion 1 located tween the handle and the jaw and provided with a center opening 2 for receiving the in or pivot 3 which connects the members A together. The disk-shaped portions 1 of the member-srl are provided with coperating wire-receeving`=notches 4; thatregister with each othe'fwlienfthe aws or handles of the members A are op'en or separated, as shown in Fig. 1, and said notches have cutting edges 4" \vhich sever the wire when the handles o t V'said members are closed or brought together.
In order that the wire-receiving notches 4 will register exactly when the 'jira-ws of the members A are opened,I I have arranged a device 5 between the disk-shaped portions l of the members i in such a manner that stops or shoulders (3 on said disk-shaped portions will strike against the ends of the device 5 when the wirereceiving notches 4 come into alinemcnt with each other, thus positively limiting the opening movement ot' the members A. The device 5 is sector shaped, and is arranged in cooperating grooves 7 formertin the meeting faces of the disk-shaped portions of the members A, said grooves being so proportioned that the meeting faces ot said disk-shaped port-ions will cont-act or bear upon eacli other, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Vhen the handles of the members A are closed or brought together the stops 6 on said members move away from theends ot' the spacing device 5. The device 5 and the stops (l may he formed in various ways without departing from the spirit ot my invention, but on account of the low cost of manufacture I prefer to form a ring-shaped groove 7 of semi-circularshape `in cross section in the meeting tace of the disk-shaped portion 1 ot each o`f\"(the members A, and arrange a pin 6 in a recess in said groove so as to form a stop that'v will strike againstone end of the device 5 when the members Aare opened, the upper ends ot the pins 6 lying tlush with the meeting faces of the disk-shaped portions of the members A. The device 5 can be-,tormed conveniently by ceiling a round iron rod and then cutting it into substantially C-` shaped segments, br i will, of course, be obvious that it is not'absolutely necessary to have the deviceI 5 of the same cross sectional shape as the combined cross-sectional area of thecoperating grooves 7 in the meeting faces ot the disleshaped portions 1, although I prefer to have the device 5. t snugly in said grooves.
A tool of the construction above-described can he manufactured at a low cost, it presents -a neat appearanee because tbe means which limits the opening' movement of the members A is `hidden from view, and it is strong and serviceable because thereis no danger of shearing oi the stops which limit the opening movement of said members.
As previouslystated, do not wish it toV be understood that my invention is limited to acombined plier' and wire-cutter; nor do wish it tobe understood that the invention is limited 'to-a wire-cutter having two wirereceiving notches arranged in the manner herein shown for my invention, broadly stated, consists in a tooL provided with two pivotaiiy connected members, a device arranged in the meeting faces of the portions of said members througii which the conneoting pivot passes, and stops on said portions which cooperate with said device to Vlimit the opening movement of said mem bers; l v
Having thus described my invention, what if. claim new and desire to secure by Letters iatent is:
1. A 'tool provided with pivotaHy-con* nected members, a sector-shaped device ar ranged between the cooperating portions ot' said members through which the connecting pivot passes, and stops on said 'portions which bear against the ends of said device and thus limit the, opening movement ofv stop on cach of said members, and a device arranged between tbe' pivotaliy-connected portions ci sai'tfmembers and cooperating suisses with saidvstops to bring said wire-receiving notches into registration when said members are opened.

A wire-cutter comprising two pivotally- Connected members having `disk-shaped portions which are provided with coperating TW1re-rece1v1ngnotches, reglstering grooves formed in the meeting facesoi said disksiiaped portions, a sector-shaped device mounted freely in said grooves, and stops on said disk-shaped portions which strike against the ends of said device vwhen said wire-receiving notches come intov alinement vwith each other."y
5. A tool of the character described, comprisingv two pivotallyconnected members having diskshaped portlons'tbrough which the pivot passes, coperatlng wire-receiving Ynotches in said disicsbapedportions, registering ring-shaped grooves formed in the meet-ing faces of said disk-sbaped portions, a sector-shaped device arranged between said disk-shaped portions in said grooves, and stops arranged in the grooves in said members which are adapted to strike against the ends of said device when said wire-receiving notches register during tbe opening movement of said members.
6. A virecutter comprising two pivotally- Connected members that are provided with cooperating cutters, a sector-shaped device mounted freely between the cooperating portions of said members through which the connecting pivot passes, and means on said members which strike against' the ends of saiddevice and thus limit the opening movement oic said members when the c0- operating cutters on said members reach a certain position.
