DEVICE FOR CLEANSING GUTLERY AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 9, 1911.
Patented Feb. 2'7, 1912.
Serial No. 653,509.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IERMANN FoLKns, Sr., a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Brooklyn borough, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices, for Cleansing Cutlery and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a cleansing de vice for cutlery, the object being to provide a simple device of this character which is adapted to retain the cleansing element and which is also adapted to support the article to be cleansed, during the cleansing process.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which will be pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of my improved cleansing device; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, looking from the left in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail side view of the cutlery supporting device; Fig. 4 is an end view of my improved cleansing device, embodied in another form; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof, partially in section, the section being taken on a line a-a in Fig. 4.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, my improved cleansing device comprises a block 1, which is provided with, in this instance, brackets 2 adapted to retain a cake of cleansing material, such, for instance, as sapolio, bon ami, &c., the said cake being indicated by the numeral 3. As can be seen in Figs. 1 and 2, a bolt 4 is passed through the block 1 and is provided at one end thereof with a wing-nut 5. The function of the bolt 4 and wingnut 5 is to adjustably secure to the block 1 a pair of slotted links 6. The bolt 4 passes through the slots 6 in the links 6, as shown. One end of each link 6 is pivotally secured as at 7, to a table or support 8, upon which the knife, spoon or other article to be cleansed is placed and preferably held by one hand. As can be seen in Figs. 3 and 2, the table or support 8 is provided with downwardly projecting flanges 9, to which the links 6 are pivotally secured. As has been stated the function of the table 8 is to support the article to be cleansed during the cleansing process, and in order that the said table may be adjusted to accommodate the dimensions of the cleansing element, I preferably adapt the said table for adjustment vertically as well as horizontally, the said adjustment being accomplished by the slotted links 6 and releasable wing-nut 5.
As illustrated; in Fig. 2, the table 8 is located at one side of the cake 3 but the said table may be moved or adjusted to assume a position centrally of the cake or at any other portion of its surface. As the cake decreases in thickness by constant use, the table 8 may be lowered and caused to rest thereupon. The adjustment of the table 8 is quite obvious and needs no further description.
Should I desire to cleanse a knife, for instance, I would place the blade thereof upon the table 8 and hold the said blade in contact with the table with one hand, and with the other hand apply the cleansing material by means of a sponge, cloth, &c. The cleansing material may be applied by first collecting the sameupon the sponge or cloth and then applying it to the blade, or it may be applied to the blade by a sliding movement, this, however, being optional. While the block 1, in this instance, is provided with the brackets 2 for holding a solid cake of cleansing material, a tray or pan may be substituted, containing powder, or a cleansing material in any other form.
My improved cleansing device, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, comprises a block 1, which is provided with vertical slots 10, 11 and 12 at each end thereof, the said block being also provided with openings 13, 14 and 15 which extend therethrough, as shown in Fig. 5. In this instance, the opening 15 retains a bolt 16, provided with a wing-nut 17, which, together with the said bolt, adjustably secures the table 18 to the said block. The table 18 comprises the end flanges 18*, provided with ribs 19, adapted to slidably fit the slots 10, 11 and 12, the end flanges 18 being connected by a top 20. As can be seen in Fig. 4, the end flanges 18 are provided with slots 21, through which the bolt 16 passes. The block 1 is provided with brackets 22 adapted to retain a block 23 of cleansing material. It is quite obvious that the table 20 may be adjusted vertically and held in any such adjusted position by means of the wing-nut. To adjust the said table, transversely of the cake 23, the table 20 would be lifted out of one slot and placed in another. To cause the table, or rather the ribs 19 thereon, to engage the slot 10, the
said table Would be turned end for end, which is quite obvious.
The operation of cleansing an article would be the same in both devices.
Having now described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cleansing device for cutlery or the like, comprising a block, means carried by said block adapted to retain a cleansing element, means adjacent said cleansing element adapted to support the article to be cleansed, and means adapted to adjust said article supporting means relative to the cleansing element.
2. A cleansing device for cutlery or the like, comprising a block, means carried by said block adapted to retain a cleansing element, adjustable links carried by said block and means carried by said links adapted to support the article to be cleansed.
3. A cleansing device for cutlery or the like, comprising a block, means carried by said block adapted to support a cleansing element, a plurality of slotted links, means adapted to adjustably secure said links to said block, and means carried by said links adapted to support the article to be cleansed.
4. A cleansing-device for cutlery or the like, comprising a support for a cleansing} element, a plurality of slotted links, a bolt adapted to pass through the slots in said, links, a Wing-nut carried by said bolt, at one end thereof, adapted to bind said links to said support, and a table secured to the free end of said links adapted to support the article to be cleansed.
5. A cleansing device'for cutleryor the like, comprising a support for a cleansing element, a plurality of slotted links, a bolt adapted to pass through the slots in said links, a Wing-nut carried by said bolt, at one end thereof, adapted to bind said links to said support, and a table pivotally secured to the free end of said links adapted to support the article to be cleansed.
Signed at New York city, N. Y. this 6th day of October, 1911.
