To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANooIs X. PAY- MENT, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in inclows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in windows, the object of the invention being to provide means in a window for preventing the rattling of the window sashes and to automatically take up the wear thereof in the sash grooves.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a window embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line a2w of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing my improved parting strip, and Fig. 4 is a detail elevation showing the connecting means for securing the parting strip to the window frame.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises an ordinary window frame 1, the view shown in Fig. 1 being taken from the interior of a building. The frame 1 is provided with the usual sash grooves 2 and upper and lower sashes 3 and 4 respectively.
In ordinary window construction if there is too much clearance between the parting strips and the window sashes which they hold in position, the latter are liable to rat tle and be noisy, and furthermore air currents are formed around the sashes which is especially disagreeable in cold weather. In order to overcome these objections to the ordinary construction a parting strip 5 is provided for each sash, said strip being resiliently mounted in the ordinary parting strip groove 6 in such a manner as to constantly exert a pressure on the adjacent sash, thus preventing rattling thereof. The parting strip 5 is formed in cross section as illustrated in Fig. 2 there being a base portion 7 somewhat wider than the body of the strip. The base portion 7 contacts normally with Specification of Letters Patent.

the bottom of the groove 6 as shown in Fig. 2. Formed adjacent to each end of the strip 5 is a recess 8 in which is secured a wire spring 9 having three loops or eyes formed therein as shown in Fig. 4. By means of the loops 10 formed in the spring 9 and a pair of nails 11 said spring is rigidly secured in each recess 8 of the parting strip 5. In order to partially conceal the spring 9 and the nails 11 which secure the same to the parting strip, walls 12 are provided as shown in the detail elevation in Fig. 4. The free ends of the springs 9 are formed into loops as illustrated in Fig. 4 and project into the recesses 13 which are formed in one wall of the groove 6, the depth of the latter recesses being as illustrated in Fig. 2. The springs 9 after being placed in the recesses 13 are secured rigidly therein by means of screws 14, the resilient action of said spring being due to bending when the spring 5 is moved from the full line to the dotted line as shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing construction it is understood that in place of the usual single parting strip for each side of the window frame that a pair of parting strips is provided in this invention, it being necessary that each'sash be provided with an independent parting strip.
It will be observed by reference to Fig. 2 that sashes of varying thickness may be inserted in the sash grooves and still operate freely therein.
In the operation of moving a sash of the window up and down the parting strip 5 resists such motion by pressing the sash to the flange 15 on the outside of the window frame 1. This frictional resistance is however slight, the same being produced by the resiliency of the spring 9.
A window parting strip as set forth will exert uniform pressure on the sashes which the same retains in position regardless of weather conditions, and due to the simplicity of its construction is a valuable improvement in window construction.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a window, a frame having a vertical groove interposed between the window sashes, a parting strip resiliently mounted in said groove and adapted to exert pressure on the adjacent sash, the resilient mounting of said parting strip comprising a pair of wire springs secured by means of screws in recesses adjacent said groove and means for securing the free ends of said springs to the inner edge of said parting strip, substantially described.
2. In a window, a vertical groove formed in the window frame between the sashes thereof, a parting strip mounted in said groove, a pair of wire springs secured to said parting strip and projecting laterally therefrom, and means for securing said springs to said frame adjacent the groove thereof, the mounting of said parting strip being such that the same will exert a constant pressure on the adjacent sash, substantially as described.
3. In a window, a parting strip groove provided in the window frame intermediate the sashes thereof, a parting strip inserted in said groove and adapted to have a limit-- ed oscillation therein, and resilient means controlling said oscillation comprising a pair of wire springs secured to said parting strip and to said frame adjacent the groove thereof, each spring being provided with three loops, two loops for the reception of nails by means of which the spring is secured to the parting strip, and one loop for the reception of a screw by means of which said spring is secured to the window frame, substantially as described.
l. In a window, a window frame provided with a pair of sash grooves, a pair of sashes vertically movable in said grooves, a parting strip groove interposed between said sash grooves and disposed parallel thereto, a parting strip resiliently mounted in said parting strip groove and having a pair of recesses in the inner edge thereof, a pair of recesses in one of said sash grooves arranged in juxtaposition with the recesses of said parting strip, and a pair of springs secured to said parting strip in the recesses thereof and in the recesses provided in said sash grooves, substantially as described.
