Description

L. D. HINGHER.
GARMENT HANGER.
' APPLICATION FILED JUNE 19,1911.
' Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Q/Vihwooeo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEE D. HINCHER, OF SHOALS, INDIANA.
GARMENT-HANGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnn D. HINCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shoals, county of Martin, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved garment hanger which is quickly and easily adjusted upon the garment to be supportedfis light, compact and economical in structure, and is at the same time very strong and durable.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this invention, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved garment hanger. Fig. II is a vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I, the shank 10 of the suspending hook 9 being shown in full lines. Fig. III is a detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. I, the arms of the bar shanks 2 being shown in full lines. Fig. IV is a detail end view showing the clamp 13 in its raised position and the clamping bars opened.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, my improved hanger comprises a pair of clamping bars 1, which are provided with shanks preferably formed of loops of wire. the shanks are provided with inturned bar engaging ends or prongs 3, which are arranged in holes 4 provided therefor in the bars. These prongs 3 are turned inwardly so that when the clamping stress is .put upon the shanks for clamping the bars, the prongs are forced into the holes rather than out of them. Thus arranged no additional means Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 19, 1911.
The arms 2 of Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Serial No. 633,971.
are required for retaining the bars on the shanks.
The pivot block 5 is provided with longitudinal grooves 6 in its sides for the pivot portions 7 of the bar shanks. The shanks are secured to the pivot block by means of the ring 8 which is arranged about the bar as shown.
The suspending hook 9 is provided with a shank 10 arranged transversely through the block 5 between its grooves 6. The lower end of the shank 10 is offset to one side as at 11 and provided with the inturned bar engaging prong 12. .The ring 8 is arranged to embrace the shank of the hook as shown, so that the ring is retained on the pivot block by the shank. The clamp 13 is provided with looped ends 14 which engage the portions 15 of the shanks.
In Fig. II, I illustrate the hanger arranged on a garment 16, which is shown in conventional form.
In Fig. IV, the clamp 13 is illustrated in its raised position in which position it will be noted that it serves to limit the spread of the clamping bars.
The ring 8 prevents the clamp 18 being slipped up over the pivot block so that it is always in position to be slipped down on the shanks, and by limiting the spread of the bars, they are always in position to be engaged with the garment merely by bringing them together. Without the means for limiting the spread of the bars, the'one bar might be swung over or engaged with the hook which would, of course, be inconvenient and annoying to the user, and prevent the rapid adjustment of the hanger upon the garment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A garment hanger comprising a pair of clamping bars; a pivot block having longitudinal grooves in its sides; looplike shanks for said bars, the loop ends of the shanks being arranged in said grooves of said block, a hook arranged transversely through said pivot block, the shank of hook being secured to one of the said bars; a ring arranged about said block to engage opposite sides of the shank of the hook whereby the ring is retained on said block and said shanks retained in said grooves thereof; and a clamping member.
2. A garment hanger comprising a pair of clamping bars; a pivot bloek having lon gitudinal grooves in its sides; loop-like shanks for said bars formed of wire, the ends of the arms being provided with inturned bar engaging prongs, the loop ends of the shanks being arranged in said grooves of said block; a hook arranged transversely through said pivot block the shank of the hook being provided with an inwardly projeoting prong engaged with one of the said bars; means for retaining said shank in said grooves; and a clamping member.
3. A garment hanger comprising a pair of clamping bars, a pivot block having longitudinal grooves in its sides; loop-like shanks for said bars, the loop ends of the shanks being arranged in said grooves of said block; a hook arranged transversely through said pivot block; a ring arranged about said block to retain said shanks in said grooves thereof, said ring being retained by said hook; and a clamping memher for said clamping bars.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two Witnesses.
