REGENERATIVE COKE-OVEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application'led February 11, 1910, Serial lNo. 543,235.
To all whom it concern.'
Be itlrnoivn that I, JEAN GERAR-n'Kiios, a
subject ofthe Dutch Queen, and residing atv Essen-Ruhr, Germany, have invented certain neiv'and usefullmprovements in Regenerative Coke-Ovens, ofwhich'the following is a specification.
This invention relates "to colreovens ofthe regenerative type, in which th'e5 Waste gases are utilized to heat the air 'supplied for fuel combustion. i
The objects of the invention are simplicity of construction, economy of heat and saving in labor of manipulation. i
One illustrative embodiment of the inventionis represented by Way of example in' the acompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a retort or coking chamber,- and Fig. 2' is a like section through a heatingwall of ,the
Fig. 4 a cross-section on the plane C-D, and Fig.,5 a 'cross-,section'oii the plane E-F in Fig. 1.

tical planes A ative coke-ovens having a. series of seven coking chambers and a series of nine regenerators operative in connection with said' coking chambers.
The same reference characters indicate corresponding 'parts in the different figures.'
The drawings represent av bench or battery of celte ovens embodying this invention.A
This bench conta-ins seven' coking chambers relation, inclosed and this class of ovens. are provided With combustion chambers b ,and .With horizontal flues f'above s'aid com being connected bustion chambers, eachiiu' -With the combustion 'chamber below it by openings-b in the top -of the said chamber. .Descending lfines g connect the fluesf with horizontal fines gj Awhich extend along 4the benchat one sidethereof. y A single regene'ifator -is y each coking chamber a and connected by lateral channels extending in opposite directions to the combustion chambersof the opposite. sidewalls oi said coking chamber. I his regenerator has a regenerating ch amber (l through which the Waste gases trom the various. combustion chambers 7;' in one direction for hea-ting up vthe regener- 8 is a cross-section on they taken together represent a y longitudinal vertical section on different ver-v of a bench or battery of regenerdisposed. beneath and c pass of combustion is passed in the other diret-tion for heating preparatory to feeding "it to said 'dombustion chambers. y Alternate regenerators are being h'eate'd by the lcombustion -continuously in the different coking chambers and Without change in the direction of draft through the combustion chambers. A horizontal v.Waste gas flue. 12 extends along the top of the regenerating chamber and. is vconnected at one end With the exhaust tlues of the combustion chambers and at the other end with lsuoli regenerating chamber. horizontal hot air`distributing flue 13 is disposedover the heating flue 12 and connected atv one end :with-,the regenerating chamber and provided-With a series of exit openings 1.3 along its rtop. A hot air feed chamber 14 is disposed over `said*distributingflue 13 and underneathrthejcoking chamber. The exit openings 13. extend from the top of the 'distributing duel?) into the bottom of. the feed chamber This feed chamber 14 is provided' with lateral vchannels b2 connect- -ing with-'the combustion chamber b in the .heatingwal'l to theleft and' with lateral channels b3 connecting the corresponding combustion chamberV c 'in the heating Wallat .the right. The openings 1.3 into the feed .chamber-14 are' disposed atintervals preterably opposite the spaces between the lateral exhaust channelsb2 and b3. yThis arrangement of the flues and 'their connecting chanto the severalvconibustion chambers-'and Vsecures a continuous operation Without rreversal of draft. 5A channel 15 connectsone wend ofthe regenerating chamber r with an channel o, a branch of the channel 15; serves as an airV inlet for said chamber.. .-Mvalve lzy'servesto open the channel oand close the channel 15 or the reverse. T he regencratin;1r chamber (I is. in coinuiunication atits oppesite end through an opening 1G and vertical passage 17 .with the horizontal flue l2 and through the end vof said flue and the opening at intervals along its top with covered lien Iings 7' which permit access foifcleanii'ig'. l The.liorizoiitalflue 12 connects at one end Patented Jan. 30,1912. i
'ator and through which air for the ysupportgases While otheralternate regeneratoi's fare.: heating the air supply,- and the connections are such that the'coking operationvgoes onf nels tends to an even feeding of the liea'tedvair v outlet flue i leading to the chimney and a 1S with the liorizonta'l"`flue lll above said The regenerative chamber f is provnltd with the horizontal flue g which serves as an inlet for hot gases for heating the lregenerating chamber. The valve h2 controls communicationbetween said tlues g and 12. rlhis valve is' operated in conjunction with the valve Zh The. valve 7c? serves to control communication at the opposite end of the flue 12 with ,the flue 13. As shown in Fig. 1 the valves 7a2, Z2 and Zig are arranged for utilizingfthe regenerating chamber which has been previously omitted, for heating the fresh air admitted through the inletvo, the current thereof taking the direction of the arrows in the vthird figure. llVhen this regenerating chamber is to be heated the valve h2 is opened, the valve Z2 is shifted to close the'inlet 02 and to open the channels 15 and the valve 7a2 closes the communication between the horizontal dues 12 and 13. In such case the Vproducts of combustion from the heating walls pass along the flue f at the top thereof, thence downward through the vertical flue g, thence into the horizontal channel 7, thence through the valves 71.2 into the horizontal flue 12, thence downward through the vcrtic'al channel 17 and opening 16 into the regenerating chamber d. In passing through this chamber d the gases heat said chamber to the proper temperature and pass out through the Vchannel 15 to the large flue z' leading to the chimney.
The dampers 7c and ZJ correspond with the dampers 7a2 above described, the damper's h and it correspond with the dampers h2 above described; and the dampers Z and Z3 correspondV with the damper Z2 above described. The dampers 702162 and k3 are preferably connected with a shaft m at one end of the b ench, and the dampers h', h2, h3, Z2 and Z3 are preferably connected with a shaft n at the opposite endv of the bench, these shafts being located longitudinally of the bench but transversely of the furnaces therein and when operative to open and close simultaneously the valves connected with them respectively. IThe regenerators at opposite ends of the bench have connections with one coking chamber only as shown in the aggregated Figs. 3-5. The gas may be supplied through a pipe 20 having jets 2 entering channels 25 having openings 2 into channels 30 having openings 31 into the combustion chamber (Z. tion secures a continuous passage of the heating gases through the heating walls in the same direction avoiding reversal of the drafts and complexity of 4regenerators.
