Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE].-
CHARLES JUDIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO NATHAN LOTH, OF NEW YORK, N.
HAIR ORNAMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 29, 1910. Serial No. 594,683.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JUDIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hair ornaments, such as barrettes, combs and the like.
The objects of my invention are to prevent the loss of such hair ornaments, and to hold the hair firmly and in shape.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of my invention, however, reference may be had to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear view of a barrette embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a rearview of a portion of the barrette of Fig. l with the parts in a different position; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged end view partly in section of a port-ion of the barrette of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is an ornamental part or base plate. A bifurcated member or post 2 is fastened to or made integral with the part 1 at one end thereof. A bar 3 is pivotedly mounted in the bifurcation of the member 2. At the other end of the base plate 1 is fastened a member 4 having a groove or slot 5 therein which has substantially the same depth as the depth of the bar 3. A locking member 6 which is substantially circular and has a projecting portion or handle as clearly shown in the drawing, is pivotedly mounted on a metal pin 7, this pin being fastened in the member 4 near the top edge thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The locking member is rotatable in a plane substantially parallel to that of the ornamental part 1. All the parts of my barrette, except the pin 7 and the pin upon which the bar 3 is mounted, are made of tortoise shell, celluloid, or v oltlhelr material having the appearance of s el I The bar 3 is passed through the hair at the back of the head, the ornamental part 1 being turned so as not toeng'age the hair. The part 1 is then turned so that the bar 3 enters the slot 5, the locking member having been rotated so that the bar may enter the slot as shown in Fig. 2. After the bar is in the slot the locking member is rotated by means of the projecting portion so as to cover the end of the bar in the slot. The hair is thus held firmly between the bar and the ornamental part and is kept in shape. By rotating the locking member 6 in a plane substantially parallel to the ornamental part 1, the movement of the looking member may be accomplished without disturbing the hair or without sticking it into the head. By locating the pin 7 near the top edge of the member 4, the locking member 6 is caused to stay closed by gravity when in the locking position. By making the locking member circular so as to conform substantially to the periphery of the member 4:, no sharp corners project in which the hair may become caught.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
1. In a hair ornament, a base plate, a post at one end thereof provided with a slot, a bar pivotally mounted at the other end of said base plate and arranged to enter said slot, said slot having substantially the same depth as the depth of the bar, a pin fastened in said post, and a locking member pivotally mounted on said pin whereby said locking member is rotatable on said post in a plane substantially parallel to said base plate, said pin being located near the top of said post causing said locking member to stay closed by gravity when in thelocking position.
2. In a hair ornament, a base plate, at one end thereof providedwith a slot, a bar pivotally mounted at the'other end of said base plate and arranged to enter said a post Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
slot, said slot having substantially the same depth as the depth of tened in said post, and a locking member pivotally mounted on locking member is rot a plane substantially plate, said pin being of said post causing to stay closed by gravity when in the lock- 1 Copies of this patent may be obtained for said bar, a pin fassaid pin whereby said atable on said post in parallel to said base located near the top said locking member five cents each, by addressing the Gommissioner of Patents,
