To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN F. NEHR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candelabra, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in candelabra, and has for its object to provide a device of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature, and of a strong and compact construction which shall be capable of ready and convenient adjustment to permit of Va rlously arranging the candles supported by.
it, andwherein means of a novel and improved description are provided for connecting the individual candle holderswith their supporting arms, such means affording not only a secure connection of the candle holders with said supporting arms, but also serving to brace and strengthen said supporting arms so as to permit of making them in increased length, or of supporting an increased number of candles thereon.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the constructlon, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved candelabrum, whereby certain important advantages are attained, and

be the In order that my invention may .better understood, I will now proceed to detaken through the means for connecting the candle holder with the supporting arms, the plane of said section being indicated by the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view showing the means for connecting the supporting arms with the standard of the device, the plane of the section being indicated by the line 33 in Fig. 1; Fig.4: is a detached detail view showing one of the locking members forming part of the means for connecting the candle holders with their supporting arms; Fig. 5 is a detached detail view, similar to Fig. 4:, but illustrating one of the base members forming part of the means for connecting the candle holders with their supporting arms; Fig. 6 is an edge view of the base member shown in Fig.
As shown in these views, the improved candelabrum is constructed with a standard, indicated as a whole at A and comprising a base or foot'adapted to be rested upon a supporting surface, and provided with a central tubular stem or socket l0 upwardly directed from it, and adapted to receive the lower end of an upper section 12, whichslides telescopically in said stem or socket to permit vertical adjustment of the standard, and is adapted to be lockedin adjusted position in said stem or socket by means of a set screw 11. The upper section 12 of the standard is herein shown vas made tubular, and its upper end is adapted to receive a reduced lower portion lt produced upon the lower end of a flattened top member B, the lower part of which is made rounded as shown at 14 to permit of being introduced and secured within said upper end of the section 12, and is provided with an annular outwardly directed flange 15, adapted to rest upon the top of said tubular member 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the draw mgs.
The upper end of the flattened top member B of the standard is provided with an upwardly directed central screw-threaded part or extremity 2 1 whereon is supported acandle holder or socket 18 provided with a drip cup 17 and adapted to receive a central candle 19 in a well known way, and at opposite sides of said flattened top member or section B are produced alined and oppositely directed lugs 16, 16, there being two such lugs, one above the other, at each of the opposite lateral edges of said flattened member or section B. The lugs 16, 16 are perforated to receive screws or bolts D, D,
which have plain shank portions 21 arranged to turn freely in said perforations of lugs 16, and are provided with reduced adjacent ends of the supporting arms C, C,
which are thereby supported for free-pivotal movement upon said flattened member or section B, so as to permit of being adjusted upwardly into a raised position such as is shown in full lines in Fig. l, or of being adjusted to a downwardly inclined position, as shown in dotted lines in said figure. As shown herein, there is a pair of said supporting arms 0, C, extended in opposite directions beyond each of the lateral edges of the flattenedtop member or section B, the arms of each pair being formed, as shown herein, from narrow flattened metal strips spaced apart and extended parallel with each other one above the other, and adapted formovement in unison with each other upon their pivotal connections with said member or section B at the screws D, D. The parallel spaced arms C, Cof each suchcpair may be of any desired length, and at suitable points in its length, each such arm C is provided with pins 25,- extended through it in ahorizontal direction, the central part of each such pin 25 being secured within a perforation in said arm and its extremities being arranged to protrude beyond the opposite forward and rear vertical surfaces of the arm so as to form projections or studs extended therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The projections or studs afforded by the protruding extremities of the pins 25 upon the arms 0, C of each pair are located at similar distances from the points whereat said arms are pivotally connected with the standard A by means of screws-D, D,,so that when such armsof each pair arein parallel spaced relation as in use, these studs or projections are positioned one above and in vertical alinement with the other, as clearly shown on the drawings, and each pair of vertically alined studs or projections at one side or face of the arms C, C are engaged in perforations 23, 23 produced in a flattened base member E, the upper extremity ofwhich has a central screw-threaded upward extension 24, similar to that of the member or section B, and adapted for screw connectlon w1th a socket or candle holder 18 which is thereby supported upon its upper end as clearly shown in Fig. 2,
and is adapted to support a candle 19 in a face of said drip cup, so as to permit the same to be securely clamped and held in relation beneath the candle holder or socket 18, and each such drip cup 17 is provided at its lower part with spaced projectionsBl,
31, which are adapted for contact upon the opposite flattened sides of the corresponding base member E so as to prevent turning movement of such drip cup upon said central screw-threaded extension 24.
The flattened base member E of each candle holder or socket 18 forms one member of a connecting means for adjustably connecting such candle holder or socket with the adjustable supporting arms 0, C of the pair at one side of the standard A, and such connecting means also comprises a locking plate or member 26 for each candle holder or socket, said plate or member being formed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 from a flat piece of metal adapted to be extended across the rear surface of the arms 0, G, opposite to the base member E, and provided with notched apertures 27, 27 produced in its upper and lower extremities, and capable of detachable engagement with the alined projections or studs afiorded upon that surface of the arms G, G by the protruding rear ends of the pins 25, 25.
29 represents a screw passed through the central part of the locking plate or member 26, which is centrally perforated as seen at 28, for this purpose, and said screw has a head contacting upon the rearside of said locking plate or member, and is provided with a threaded shank or stem which is extended from the forward side of said plate or member 26 and passes centrally between the arms'G, C of the corresponding pair and through a central aperture 21 produced in the flattened base member E between the apertures 23, 23 and has its extremity provided with a thumb nut 30,
which upon being turned in one direction w serves to draw said screw endwise in such a way as to cause the members E and 26 to exert clamping pressure upon the forward and rear surfaces of the corresponding arms G, C, and when reversely turned, serves to relax such clamping pressure.
Since the members 26 and E of the connecting means are adapted for clampingengagement upon opposite sides of the corresponding arms 0, C, it will be seen that said members afford an extremely simple and effective means for locking the arms in adjusted position, since such clamping engagement being repeated beneath each candle holder alongthe arms of each pair permits of locking each pair of arms-G against vertical pivotal movement upon the standard with much greater efficiency than would be possible with a single locking device adjacent to the pivot connections of the arms with the standard.
From the above description of my improvements, it will be evident that the candelabrum constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive. nature, and is parand for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A candelabrum having a standard, arms pivotally connected with the standard and extended therefrom in parallel spaced relation, projections extended from opposite sides of said arms at different distances from their pivotal connections with the standard, and a plurality of devices positioned along said arms at different distances from the pivotal connections of the arms with the standard and each comprising two members extended across the space between the arms with apertures engaged with the opposite projections thereo and adapted for clamping engagement at opposite sides of said arms to prevent pivotal movement of the arms upon their pivotal connections with the standard.
2. A candelabrum having a standard, arms pivotally connected with the standard and extended therefrom in parallel spaced relation, projections extended from opposite sides of said arms at different distances from their pivotal connections with the standard, and a plurality of devices positioned along said arms at difi'erent distances from the pivotal connections of the arms with the standard and each comprising two members extended across the space between the arms with means engaging the opposite projections thereof and adapted for clamping engagement at opposite sides of said arms to prevent pivotal movement of the arms upon their pivotal connections with the standard.
