COLLAR AND NECK-PAD SUPPORT,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1912.
Application filed October 2, 1911. Serial No. 652,364.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. LIND UIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVinthrop,in the county of Sibley and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar and Neck-Pad Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in collar and neck pad supports for harness.
One obj ect of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby the hame collar of a harness may be supported and prevented from coming into contact with the neck of the animal and irritating any sore places thereon.
A further object is to provide a support of this character which may be readily applied and attached to the collar and which may be adjusted to fit the neck and hold the collar in the desired position.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coltical sectional view through the front pad and the forward end of the pad spacing bar. Fig. 3 is a side View of lar supporting bars; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
' My invention is designed to support a hame collar and to hold the same out of engagement with any sore spots on the neck of the animal. lVith this end in View the in vention comprises a pad spacing bar lwhich may be of any suitable length and is curved upwardly intermediate its ends as shown. To the rear end of the bar is riveted or otherwise secured a rear pad and collar supporting strap, while to the forward end of the bar is adjustably secured a front pad and collar supporting strap 3. The end of the bar to which the strap 3 is secured is provided with a plurality of screw holes 4 to receive a thumb screw 5 which is passed through the strap 3 thereby adjustably connecting the latter to the front end of the bar. Between the head of the screw 5 and the strap is arranged a washer or wear plate the ends of the looped the lower ends of the rear one of the colbar 1 are front and rear neck engaging pads 7 which, when the device is in place engage the animals neck at a suitable dlstance 1n 1 front and at the rear of the sore spot thereon. The pads 7 may be of any suitable construction but are here shown and are preferably in the form of elliptical shaped pieces of leather or other flexible material.
The lower ends of the straps 2 and 3 are connected to the ends of collar supporting bars 8 which are disposed on the opposite sides of the collar and hames preferably a short distance above the points where the traces are connected with the hames. The ends of the straps 2 and 3 are inserted through slots 9 formed in the ends of the bars and the straps are adjusted to any desired length by means of buckles 10 arranged thereonand with which are engaged straps after being passed 9 in the bars 8. On the portions of the straps are arranged slides 11 whereby the ends are held tothrough the slots gether in close engagement as shown. lar and pad support; Fig. 2 1s a detall ver- Connected with the rear strap 2 and with pad 7 are diagonally disposed holding and adjusting straps 12 the lower ends of which are adjustably secured to snap hooks 13 by means of buckles 14. The snap hooks 13 are adapted to be engaged with eyes 15 formed in the bars 8 near their forward ends as shown. The straps 12 are provided to hold the rear supporting strap and pad 7 and to prevent the same and the front strap and pad from slipping back on the animal and the front strap and pad from coming into engagement with the sore places on the animals neck. The lower ends ofthe strap 12 are looped through the snap hooks l3 and are adjusted by the buckles 14 in the same manner as described in connection with thesupporting straps 2 and 3.
The ends of the bars 8 are curved outwardly to a slight extent thus preventing said ends from coming into engagement with the shoulder and sides of the animal and in the upper edges of the bars midway between their ends are formed rectangular notches 16 with which are adjustably engaged metal clips 17 in the ends of which are formed alined slots 18. lVith the slots 18 in the clips 17 are engaged haine attaching straps 19 which are adapted to be buckled through the loops or staples in the hames to which the forward ends of the traces are secured. After the straps 19 have been thus engaged with the hames the supporting straps 2 and 3 are adjusted to lift the hames and the collar upwardly and to support the same in elevated position with the upper end of the collar above and out of contact with the sore place on the animals neck thus preventing the collar from irritating the same.
By means of a pad and collar support constructed in accordance with my invention it will be seen that the hame collar may be held in position above the upper edge of the neck of the animal without interfering with the use of the collar for draft purposes at the same time preventing the collar from chafing and making sore places on the neck or from irritating such places that have already been made.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
1. A collar and neck pad support comprising a pair of collar supporting bars, said bars having slotted outwardly turned ends and having in their upper edges midway between their ends a plurality of notches, a collar engaging strap adapted to be secured in one of the notches of said bars, front and rear supporting straps secured to the slotted ends of said bars, adjustable holding straps secured at their upper ends to said rear supporting straps, means to adjustably connect the lower forward ends of said holding straps with said collar supporting bars, a spacing bar secured at one end tosaid rear supporting strap and having an adjustable connection at its opposite end with said forward supporting strap, and pads secured to said supporting straps below the ends of said spacing bar.
2. A hame collar support comprising a pair of supporting bars, said bars having in their upperedges intermediate their ends a plurality of notches, clips adapted to be engaged with the notches in said bars, collar attaching straps engaged with said clips whereby said bars are adjustably secured to the hames of the collar, front and rear adjustable supporting straps secured-to the ends of said bars, adjustable holding straps secured at one end to said rear supporting straps and having a detachableconnection at their oppositeends with the forward ends of said supporting bars, a spacing bar secured at one end to the rear supporting straps and having an adjustable connection at its opposite end to the forward support ing strap, said bar being curved upwardly between its ends, and pads secured to the front and rear supporting straps below the ends of said spacing bar. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
