N. KRAMER.
UMBRELLA STAND. APPLICATION FILED mum, 1911.
Patented Jam '2, 1912.
W] TN SSES ATTOR YS:
UNITED s ATEs PATENT OFFIC.
NICHOIiAS KRAMER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
UMBRELLA-STAND.
- residing at Chicago,in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- ,Stands, of which the following is a specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I
This invention relates to umbrella 'stands especially designed for use in hotels, restau rants and other public places, and the primary object of my invention is the provision ofnovel means for temporarily locking an umbrella, whereby it cannot be removed from the stand without an inspection of the umbrella, thereby'preventing persons from accidentally removing umbrellas without ascertaining that the same is their property.
Another object of this invention is to provide an umbrella stand with a drip pan for collecting the drainings of umbrellas, thereby preventin the drainings from injuring a carpetor orming a pool of water upon a floor.
A further object of this invention isto provide an umbrella stand that is" simple in construction, durable," neat in appearance and highly eflicient for the purposes .for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.-
Reference will now be had to'the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stand in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the stand, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a modified form of stand.
An umbrella stand in accordance with this invention comprises posts 1 connected by a lower longitudinal bar 2 and. upper longitudinal bars 3 and 4;, these elements providing a rectangular vertical frame that is preferably made of tubing with the lower ends of the posts provided with feet 5 and the upper ends thereof withornamentations 6. The bars 2, 3 and 4 have the ends thereof connected to the posts 1 by T connections 7 and 8, and connected to the connections 7 are the rear ends of supports 9, said supports having the forward ends thereof bent Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
Application filed July 27, 1911. Serial No. 640,893,
inwardly with the lower ends of the posts 1 and provided with feet 10.
The bars 3 and 4 are provided with wire holders soldered or otherwise connected to the bars 3 and 4. .Each holder comprises a split loop 11 having one end thereof bent lnwardly, as at 12 and downwardly at an angle, as at 13 to the bar 3, it being preferable to insert the end of the wire in an opening 14 provided therefor in the bar 3.
Arranged upon the supports 9 at a point removed from the posts 1 is a drip pan 15 havlng'a flared mouth 16 and a bottom plate 17 that inclines toward the center of the drip pan, which is provided with a central opening 18. The bottom plate 17 is secured to the supports 9 by screws or other fastenmg means 19. The bottom plate 17, intermediate the ends thereof, is provided with drawer cleats 20 for the'flanged edges 21 of a drawer or receptacle 22 adapted to receive dripplngs from the pan 15. The forward end of the drawer' or receptacle 22 has a handle 23 whereby it can be easily removed from beneath the drip pan 15.
After the lower end or tip of the umbrella is placed in the pan 15, the stick or handle is then inserted in the holder and when the umbrella is in the foregoing position it is obvious that it is prevented from being quickly removed as the stick is compelled to be shifted from out of the holder before the umbrella can be removed.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing there is illustrated a slight modification of the invention, wherein the bar 4? is provided with a holder 11 that is made of a single piece of metal festooned or bent to provide open holders in which the sticks or handles of umbrellas can rest.
The umbrella stand in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal, enameled or otherwise finished to present a neat appearance.
What I claim is 2- An umbrella stand comprising a pair of vertically disposed posts, inverted angle shaped supports projecting forwardly from the lower ends ofsaid posts, a drip pan mounted upon the forward portions of' said supports and spaced from said posts, a pair of superposed parallel bars connecting the upper portions of said posts together below thetop thereof, a series 'of forwardly projecting split loops secured to the front portionof the u per of said bars and spaced from each ot er, one end of each of said loops bent inwardly to extend parallel with the. upper of said bars said 1nwardly ex tending portions of a length substantiallv half the diameter of the loop and providing forwardly thereof a side entrance opening for the handle of an umbrella and further providing in connection with therear portion of the loop a reduced space for the reception of the handle of the umbrella when the latter extends upwardly and rear- NICHOLAS KRAMER.
