JOHN MOSSOP, OF ALTRINCHAM, ENGLAND.
MUSICAL-INSTRUMENT CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2,1912.
Application filed July 9, 1910. Serial No. 571,141.
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Mossor, a subject of His Majesty the King of England, residing at 96 Hale road, Altrincham, in the county of Chester, Kingdom of England, insurance agent, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical- Instrument Cases, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in music boxes employed as attachments to organs and pianofortes as a means for holding a number of sheets or books of music conveniently to the hand of an organist or piano player without the necessity of his or her leaving or rising from the seat.
All the foregoing music boxes or receptacles have involved structural alteration of the front portion of the instrument below the key board, but in addition a detachable music case has been proposed consisting of a rail hinged to bars connected by a bar having hooks to engage over the upper edge of the front door, the position of the receptacle being determined by a cord when open and being secured by a button when closed. Such receptacle, however, as designed, would greatly interfere with the comfort of the player when seated at the instrument.
In carrying my improvements into effect I do not make any structural alteration in the instrument, but I fit two detachable music boxes or receptacles, each supported on brackets secured to a frame resting below the key board of the instrument, one upon each side of the pedals, leaving a free space in the middle for the knees and feet of the player. I illustrate this arrangement in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a piano showing two detachable music boxes fitted according to my invention below the keyboard of the instrument. Fig. 2 is an end sectional elevation showing one of the music boxes in its closed position and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the music box in the open position.
In these views, a designates the piano or like musical instrument, and b, b the two music boxes, which are of any suitable size and shape, and are fitted as shown below the keyboard of the piano, and one near each end so as to leave a clear space midway between them for the knees and feet of the player.
Each box I), b is pivoted or attached by hinges (Z to a shelf 6 supported on brackets f secured to a frame 9 resting on the base of the piano to which it is held by any suitable means as the swivel catch piece it. The music boxes I), 7) with their frames are thus readily detachable from the instrument.
Each box is provided with a knob 2' or equivalent by which it can be readily drawn forward into the tilted position shown in Fig. 3 being held there by any suitable means. For example by means of the strip of webbing 7' shown in Fig. 3, or by the nut is on a curved rod Z or any like device. When tilted forward the player can readily take music from or put music into either box 7), b, and he can easily open or close either box without necessarily leaving his seat. I may attach the box frames in the same way to organs in those cases where a front board is available above the pedals.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A musical instrument case having a pro jecting key board in combination with a frame detachably secured to the front of said case beneath said key board, a shelf on said frame, a music receptacle hinged to the front edge of said shelf and provided with an open top, said receptacle being adapted to normally rest upon said shelf and under said key board, a handle for swinging said receptacle outwardly, a curved bar secured to said receptacle and extending through a perforation in said shelf and a stop adjustably mounted onsaid bar beneath said shelf to limit the forward movement of said receptacle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 23rd day of June 1910.
JOHN MOSSOP.
