To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting Devices for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is .a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertain's' to make and use the same.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines such "as are usually employed in connection with'automobiles and various panying drawing forms a part, inwhich;
the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure. 1 is a view showing the crank shaft of an internal combustion engine, the fly-wheel mounted thereon and my improve ment usedin connection therewith, and the construction of which 'is shown in section,

In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the crank shaftof an internal combustion engine, which shaft is provided with the usual flywheel a and, in the practice of my invention I provide a supplemental crank shaft 1) which passes through and is'supported'in a bracket sleeve 0 having an angularly arranged supporting plate 0 rigidly secured to apart 0 of the frameof the engine or the framework of an automobile in which the engine is used, and the sleeve 0 and supple mental shaft 6 are in axial line with the crank shaft a and the supplemental shaft 1) longitudinally movable through said sleeve. 7

Secured to the inner side of the end portion of the crank arm e through which the supplemental shaft 1) passes .is a ratchet wheel b, said ratchet wheel being secured to said arm, in theform of construction shown, by screws b and the spring (2 :bears on said ratchet wheel or .on a washer it placed between said wheel and said spring,and' said spring normally operates to hold the supplemental shaft 1) in its outermost position, as shown in Fig. 1, but said shaft may be forced inwardly so thatthe lock tooth or and mounted on the outer end of the suppleprojection 12 on the head 6 thereof will engage the lock tooth or projection a on the crank shaft a when said shaft is turned.
Mounted onthe outer side of the sup'porting plate 0 of thebracket sleeve 0 are a pluarc of a circle around and above said ratchet wheel, and springs i are employed in connection with said p'awls sons to hold them at all times in position for operation in connection with the ratchet wheel 71,, and when I the supplemental shaft is in its outermost is forced inwardly so as to operatethe crank shaft a, the pawls a will be fully in engagement with the'teeth of the ratchet wheel or in position'to fully engage said teeth, and said .pawls are also 1 arranged as shown 1n Fig. 2 so that they will fully engage the teeth of the wheel h at different times n lts ,revolution or in such manner as to permlt only a sli h-t backward movement of the shaft of said wheel and of the crank arm 6. It is-a well known fact that in starting or cranking internal combustion engines there is frequently a quick backward rotation or what is known as a back-kick of the crank shaft or the starting shaft of the engine and this results in -a quick backward movement .of the crank arm which frequently results in serious injury to the operator, but with my invention this danger to the operator in starting or cranking n- 'gines of the class specified 1s entirely done away with, as will be seen fronrthe foregoing 'description,' the accomp any1ng draw ing forming partof sald descrlption and the following statement of the operatlon of cranking or'start-ing the engme.
