To all whom it may concern.'
' Be it known that I, W'ILBERT Gr. WISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Heaters, of which the following is .a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Uy invention relates more particularly to a water-heater designed for h eating buildings; the requirements being the maintenance of a maximum circulation of water at the desired heating temperature, for the amount of fuel consumed.
This invention, as herein embodied and set forth, comprises a sectional water-heater, wherein the circulation is e'ected largely by the inclined and staggered transverse water-tubes, which are given such inclination as to cause the water to iiow within the heater transversely and circumferentially. Moreover, the adjacent sections of said heater are so constructed as to assist in bringing the water to the desired temperature and directing the products of combustion about the heater-section most eifectually.
The details of my invention will be very readily understood upon making reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a vertical section through a water heater embodying my improvements; the same being mounted upon a base of suitable-form, and somewhat diagrammatically indicated in said drawings. Fig. II is a perspective view of the heater-section containing the transverse water-tubes; and Fig. III is a detail showing two of the outer transverse tubes and a slightly modied construction.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings, I have employed the same Vcharacter of reference to indicate similar parts.
It should be understood that the base B, the fire-box and the accompanying heatersections may be of t-he desired type, since the principal features of my invention are present in the intermediate heater-section shown in Fig. II. I preferably associate therewith the tire-box a, which has hollow walls and is surrounded by a body of water. Immediately above the lire-box and connecting therewith is the hollow crown Z). having circumferential apertures b permitting the passage of the products of combustion. Superposcd upon the tire-box scction is the improved heater-section c, having alternately inclined central water-tubes c, the end tubes of greater inclination c2 c3, and the connecting circumferential open- 'ings o4 for said section. These members preferably are integrally cast, and serve materially to augment the heating effect and circulation of the water. The top section (l also is hollow and is provided with a central opening d through which the products of combustion are directed beneath the dome e to the outlet or flue f, connecting with the chimney stack.
Referring to Fig. II, I have indicated by means of darts, the direction of the How of water in the heater-section c, and the circulation of the products of combustion from the fire-box and about the tubes within the heater-section will be ,apparent by referring to Fig. I. F rom this showing, it will be readily understood that the inclined pipes are subjected to the heated gases and products of combustion, first directed circumferentially against the side inner walls of the heater-section c, andthen drawn toward the center through the opening d in the superposed section CZ. As a result thereof the water in heater-section c is equalized in its circulation, and is directed circumferentially at either side through the inclined pipes c. The end pipes c2, which are farthest from the vertical connecting outlets, are given greater inclination; rising from the common central inlet c5. In Fig. III, a
nected with said inlet o5, and a plurality of such pipes may be employed as desired where the height of the heater-section is not suiiicient to give the desired inclination, or a greater circulatory eifect is required. At the opposite side of heater-section c, the pipes c3 rise from theterminals of a chord, to the common exit 0"; the inclination of said pipes being greater than the central transverse pipes c and substantially that of the pipes c2. Since the pipes c2 and 03 are sharply divergent from or to a common inlet across a short chord of the heater section, at the front .and back thereof, it is apparent that their inclination and circulatory effect is greater than that of the intermediate and longer pipes c. This will be immediately noted upon viewing the upper 'second set of pipes 02 is likewise shown conportion of the central vertical section, Fig. I, which indicates that the pipes o2 and c3 have their total inclination from top to bottom of the heater section, at either side of a bisecting vertical plane. The common inlet c5, and the outlet c6, `accordingly contribute to the maximum circulation obtainable within restricted spaces; the one supplying water to the inclined pipes c2, and the other serving as a common exit for the water from the pipes c3, when the waterl heateris in operation. As best shown in Fig. II, the pipes and the connecting annular water-chamber are integrally cast, to avoid any chance of leakage. Thus, all of the available heating space within the heater-section c is effectively utilized, and the pipes are so arranged and given such inclination as to insure the maximum heating effect and equalized circulation of the contained water. Adjacent heater-sections contribute to this; the crown b with its depending center assisting to secure the circumferential flow of the water, while the openings b direct the heat most eft'ectually within the heater-section c.
Having now explained the structural features and general operation of the waterheater embodying my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by these Letters Patent, the following;-
1. A water-heater section comprising a horizontal chambered or hollow annular member, and a plurality of connecting transverse tubes interiorly thereof, which are sharply inclined and extend between connections positioned respectively at the upper and lower levels of said member upon either side of a vertical bi-secting plane, substantially as set forth.
2. In a water-heater, the combination with a fire-box, of a superposed crown having peripheral passages or iues, a horizontal water heater-section positioned above said crown and equipped with a plurality of transverse inclined pipespositioned immediately above the peripheral iiues, and a central dome connecting with the chimneystacl, substantially as set forth.
3. In a water-heater, the combination with a tire-box, of a chambered crown having peripheral passages or flues, a superposed connecting water heater-section, comprising a chambered annular member and transverse inclined pipes within said member immediately above the flues, respectively connecting with a. common opening and sharply inclined divergently to separate connections at either side of the annular member, and a central dome above said section connecting with the chimney-stack, substantially as set forth.
4. A water-heater section comprising a horizontal chambered inclosing member, and transverse inclined pipes therein extending substantially from the upper to the lower levels of said section, connected with a common opening and sharply inclined divergently to separate connections at either side, substantially as set forth.
5. A water-heater section comprising a chambered inclosing member, transverse inclined pipes therein connected with a common opening and sharply inclined divergently to separate connections at either side, and inclined transverse pipes positioned in staggered relation within said member and extending from top to bottom and bottom to top respectively, substantially as set forth.
6. A water-heater section comprising an annular member c, divergent inclined pipes SO c2 03 respectively connecting with a common inlet and outlet at opposite sides, and intermediate inclined pipes c in alternately staggered relation, substantially as set forth.
7 In a water-heater, the combination with a fire-box, of a chambered crown provided with peripheral lues, a superposed water heater-section connecting therewith equipped with transverse inclined pipes, and a superposed section thereon having a reduced central opening for the passage of the products of combustion, substantially as set forth.
8. In a water-heater, the combination wit-h a suitable fire-box, of a chamberedY crown having peripheral passages or fines, a superposed heater-section comprising an annular member having water heating pipes transteriorly of the heater-section, substantiallyV as set forth. l
