WIRE-CLAMPING STRETCHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. JAGGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sonora, in the county of Hardin and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tire-Clamping Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in wire clamp and stretchers and has particular application to a device of the class described adapted especially for use in connection with stretching and tightening wire fences, either woven wire or single strands.
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide a stretcher and clamp `which will embody in its construction the desired features of simplicity, strength and eiciency, and by means of which awire or section of wire fencing may be rapidly, quickly and thoroughly tightened.
Vith the above-recited objects, and others of a similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying my invention and illustrating the manner of employing the same in connection with wire clamping bars. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device, the latter being shown in closed position for clamping a single wire. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A 'indicates my improved grip or clamping member as an entirety, the latter comprising a member having the curved handle portion 2 provided with a ring or eye 3 to which is adapted to be connected a chain, wire or the like of a wire stretcher or reel of any desired form. Formed integral with and eX- tending from the handle portion 2 is the curved arm 3 terminating in a rounded end 4f.
The numeral 5 designates the secondmember of the clamp, which is formed with a bifurcated end 6 within which is pivoted yat 7, the member 1, the pivot connecting the bifurcated portion 6 to the member 1 intermediate the latter. Extending from the bifurcated end 6 of the member 5 is the main body portion of the member which is of in- Specification of Letters Patent.

verted L-shaped form and is indicated at v8. Pivotally mounted upon the handle portion of the member l is a clamping jaw 9 adapted to clamp a single wire such as shown at a in Fig. 2 against the adjacent side of the bifurcated end 6 of the L-shaped clamp member.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that I employ two clamping bars b-b of wood or other suitable material and between which is adapted to be placed a portion of the woven wire fence to be clamped, as shown at W. In actual operation, the device is open to receive the clamping bars in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the bars being retained by engagement of the L-shaped member and the curved arm of the member 1 with the longitudinal edges of the bars. If any desired form of stretching device be now attached to the handle end of the member 1 so that a pull or strain is placed upon the handle, the clamp bars will be firmly gripped and held while the wire fencing is. stretched.
To employ the device, as is shown in Fig. 2, that is to say, to stretch a single wire, the end of the wire is placed alongside the outer face of the bifurcated section 6 and held between said face and the adjacent clamping member 9. The wire so clamped may then be stretched by exerting a pulling strain upon the handle which will also tend to move the two sections of the grip toward each other.
It will be seen that I have provided a very simple yet effective means for clamping and holding a section of wire fencing or a single wire when it is desired to stretch the same, and, furthermore, my device, comprising as it does few and simple parts may be manufactured and sold at a relatively low cost.
In order to connect the two gripping members and to hold the same under tension, I provide a spring 10, one end of which is connected to the L-shaped gripping member 11 while the opposite end is connected to the handle at 12, said spring being provided intermediate its ends with the coil 13.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a gripping member having an angular body portion and an end member, a second gripping member to which the firstmentioned gripping member is pivoted, said second gripping member having a clamping element connected thereto and adapted to clamp a Wire against the adjacent portion of the first-mentioned member.
2. A device of the class described comprising an angular gripping member formed with an inclined bifurcated end, a second gripping member pivoted to the bifurcated portion of the irst member and comprising a handle portion and a curved gripping arm portion, a clamping element carried by the handle portion and adapted to clamp a Wire against the inclined bifurcated end of the first member, and a spring connecting the two members of the grip.
