Application filed June 9; 1911. Serial No. 632,155.
Specification 0t Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
To all whom may concemr Be it known that we, JOHN SCHMIDT and HENRY SoHi'i'rTERLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Chardon, in the county of Geauga and State of-Ohio,'have invented Bakery Products, of which the following is a specification.
certain new ,and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Drying Macaroni and Llke This invention hasreference toapparatus for drying macaroni and like bakery products, andthe invention consists in the construction and combination-of parts substan: tially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims. a v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2- is a longitudinal sectional elevation there- I of substantially through the center. Fig. 3
is a longitudinal sectional plan view of the invention. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional elevat-ion through the heating chamber, and Fig.
5 is a cross sectional .viewthrough the drying chamber showing the blower in the rear.
The apparatus as thus shown is designed especially for di'yingmacaroni, but is not necessarily limited to this single use or product As shown the invention comprises an in closure which is say about nine feet'in length by about seven feet in width and about six feet in height, over all, and within this outer wall there are several distinct compartments.
In the present views we show straps orbands I) about thesaid wall as maybe needed to hold-the'same firmly together, and the interior ofthe apparatus is variously sub-divided into chambers and compartments as the work to be done may require. Thus, the front and main portion of the'apparatus comprises the drying chamber.
a. which is divided somewhat arbitrarily into 'two compartments longitudinally, the base sill S-- constituting part of the main frame stance.
.For example,- for long or stringmacaroni we find it advantageous to provide a series of racksR upon which the macaroni can be hung or suspended, while for other purposes we may use a seri'esof wire screen pans P. These pans may be arranged'in tiers one above the other and adapted to be bodilyv drawn outand replaced if preferred; Either or both kinds of trucks can be'used, or their equivalent, according to kind or. nature of stock to be dried. A-transverse wall W separates the said compartments for the heater chamber, and the steam coils or pipes E for heating the air for the dried chamber are located in the said heater chamber. -Control of the. steam flowing through these coils or pipes is by valves 2 and 3, or their equivalent, outside the main wall of the apparatus.
A fan or blower'B is located in a suitableopening in the wall W,-and saidbloweris driven by shaft4 from any suitable source of power, said shaft being-supported in suit- 3 able bearings 5 and 6 and'extending through the rear wall of the apparatus for power connections. U K
Admission, of air to the heating chamber and exhaust by means of suitable doors or dampers disposed here and there as the necessary ventilation may suggest. For example, the bottom rear door 7 may be raised tion by counterweighted chain 8, or its equivalent, and in that case exit or exhaust would be say by door ordoors 9 in the top of the apparatus, the circulation of air being through exhaust fan or blower B and through thedrier' compartments beneaththe false top 10. But if for jany reason it'- be} desirablef to. merely circulate the air within the apparatus under increasing heat conditions the respective inlets and outlets willbe closed and the door or'damper 12 in the top 10 be opened, say about as seen in Fig. 2, more or less. This extends across over the top'of the-heating chamber, and
with the blower in operation the air will be caused totravel in a circuit through the apparatus and the increasing heat thereof will take care of anyfurther absorbed moisture.w Sometimes lt occurs that the condition of the materlalon the racks or in the pans requiresmorel surface {moisture than it. posg -more or less and sustained in raised posisesses inherently, and in such cases we em- 1' ments. This'spraying head is connected by pipe 16 with the main steam s'upplypipe ploy a steam spray 15 which "more orl'ess saturates the 1 air and meetsthe require-.11
17 and is controlled by Valve 18. The door 12 is controlled in this instance from the side of the apparatus by a cord 20 over sheave 21 on rod 22 which'has a ratchet head 23 outside the main wall and a pawl 24 to' engage and hold the same. Entrance to the heating chamber is by door 25, Fig. 3. A steam pressure reducing valve 27 is employed in the steam pipe Connection between valves 2 and 3 and a pressure gage 28 is shown in connection with said pipe 17. What we claim is: v 1. An apparatus for drying macaroni having a drying Compartment provided with a draft passage front to rear in its top, and a door opening from the outside into the rear of said passage, a heating chamber across the rear of said drying compart-ment and a door at its top from said passage, a blower between said heating chamber and said'compartment and a spraying device in said heating chamber.
2. An apparatus for drying macaroni having drying compartments side by side and a door to enter a truck at the front of each compartment opening down to the floor thereof, a heating chamber and a wall between the same and said compartments and said compartments front to rear, a door opening from the discharge end of said passage into said heating chamber, and means in said drying chamber to moisten the air therein.
A macaroni drying apparatus comprising a heating chamber and a drying compartment in front thereof and a wall between said chamber and compartment, a rotary blower in said wall adapted to discharge into -said compartment, a steam spray in said heating chamber behind said blower and arranged to discharge toward the same, and a steam supply pipe and valves to control the flow of steam to said spray. I
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two' witnesses.
