Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON SGI-IUH, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.-
CLAMPING- DEVICE FOR WOODEN BOXES AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AN'roN SoIrUH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and residing at 8 Getreidemarkt, Vienna, Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Wooden Boxes and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to clamping devices for wooden boxes and the like, these devices consisting of a flat bridge piece preferably of sheet metal, together with two lateral shanks thereon the object or purpose of these devices being to prevent any undue opening of the boxes or the like without making at once visible any such eifort.
It is the object of the present invention to make known at once every undue efi'ort, tending to remove the clamping device from the box and also to prevent absolutely any reinserting of the clamp into the box.
It is a further object of this invention to enable the manufacture of the clamp in a most economical way.
The drawings illustrate two modes of execution of my invention.
Figure 1 shows a clamp in a perspective view, Fig. 2 the same in sectional elevation inserted into a box fixed thereto with a nail, and Fig. 3 shows an alternative mode of execution of the clamp.
a is a bridge piece of the clamp and 6-22 are the shanks projecting thereof, these shanks being preferably pointed or sharpened at their ends. It is an essential feature of the present invention, that the shanks bb are stamped out from the material forming the said bridge of the clamp and it is readily to be seen, that thereby a very economical manufacture of the clamp is insured. Furthermore, since the crosspieces cc remaining at the borders of the bridgepiece after stamping are very narrow, it will be readily understood, that every effort tending to remove the clamp from the box causes an immediate tearing of the said crosspieces.
It is preferable to protect the borders of the bridge piece against injuries as shocks. In order to obtain such protection it has been found advantageous to insert the brid e piece of the clamp into the Wall of the box in Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 12, 1910.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Serial No. 596,973.
such a manner that no edge of the clamp proj cots beyond the wall of the box and this insertion is referably performed when the clamp is drlven into the box. The same purpose may be attained by bending inwardly the four edges of the bridge piece, these bent edges cutting therefore into the wood if driven in. Fig. 3 of the drawing shows a clamp, the edges cl thereof being bent in accordance and to the purpose before described.
Having now described the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with two abutting pieces of material, of a bridge piece comprising a flat, straight body portion extending across and lying abreast of the juncture of said pieces, said body portion having shanks stamped out from portions thereof lying wholly within the margins of said body and the shanks comprising more than half of the material of the body portion to materially weaken the same, and a nail or the like extending through said pieces and shanks and lying parallel with said body portion, substantially as described.
2. In combination with two abutting pieces of material, of a bridge piece comprising a flat, straight body portion extending across and lying abreast of the juncture of said pieces, said body portion having shanks stamped out from portions lying wholly within the margins of said body with the bases of the shanks near the ends of said body and the ends of the shanks being formed of portions near the center of said body thereby forming a relatively narrow central connecting bridge piece for the body and relatively narrow end connecting bridge pieces for said body, said stamped out portion comprising more than half of the material of the body portion to thereby weaken the same, and a nail orthe like extending through said abutting pieces and shanks and lying parallel to said body portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTON SCHUH.
Witnesses:
IGNAZ KNoR SGHNAGH, AUGUST FUGGEB.
