COMBINATION-INKSTAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led October 22, 1910, Serial No. 588,519. Renewed October 11, 1911. Serial No. 654,163.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'VVILLIAM D. HEARRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loveland, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Inlstands, of which the following is a specification, reference being lhad therein `to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ink stands and'.
has for its object to provide an improved ink stand so constructed and arranged that ink may be gradually supplied from the ink well to the ink cup.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an ink stand constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the device for feeding ink to the ink cup. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view in longitudinal section of a portion of the ink stand and a device for moistening stamps and envelops. Fig. 5 is a view in cross section of the ink stand on the line X-X of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention an ink stand is provided having its body formed in any suitable manner and preferably as here sho-wn of an extended rectangularshape so as to rest squarely on the table and not be in danger of being upset. The ink stand, as here shown, is formed with a rear portion 1 and a front portion 2, the top of which is somewhat'lower than the rear portion 1. The rear portion l is provided with a pair of wells 3 one of which is shown in Fig. 5, the upper end of said well communicating with an opening 4 in the top of the ink stand, which is closed by a stopper 5. A short hole or passage way 6 leads from the lower end of each well 3 to a smaller well 7 in which is located a disk or piston 8 mounted on t-he lower end of a rod 9. The upper end of the well 7 is provided with an opening 10 in the top of the ink stand which is closed by a stopper 11 having a central passage way 12 through which extends a rod 9 which is bent at a right angle to form a handle 13, said bent portion being located in and projecting from a vertical slotv 14 in the stopper 11. Communicating with the upper end of one of the wells 7 is a horizontal hole 15 which opens into a short groove 16 located at the edge of a basin 17 and communicating with the same. The
bottom of the basin is covered with felt or other moisture absorbing material which extends about the edge of the basin except at vthe short groove 16. The other well 7 is formed with a passage way communicating with its upper end similar to the passage vway 15 and opening `into an ink cup 19,
of ink is caused to pass through the passage yway opening from the top of the well 7 into the ink cup 19 by seizing the handle 13 and lifting the rod 9 which causes the piston 8 tok force a quant-ity of ink into the ink cup 19. This operation is repeated as often as the ink is exhausted from the ink cup 19. By forming the ink cup 19 with a narrow o-pening 20 the edges of the latter serve as a stop to prevent the pen being inserted too deeply into the ink cup thereby avoiding too much inl; getting upon the pen. Vater is supplied to the other well 8 and as in the case of the ink it is passed into the well 7 and is lifted by the piston 8 so that a small quantity may be supplied to the basin 17 and meisten the moistening pad 18. By this means the supply of water in the basin 17 can keep the pad 18 wet and the pen may be conveniently wiped on said pad. After the rod 9 has been raised it may be held in elevated position by swinging the bent portion or handle 13 to one side so as to rest on the top of the stopper 11.
In order that postageystamps may be conveniently moistened without using the tongue, a pad 21 is adapted to absorb moisture and is seated in a recess 2,2 in the top of the ink stand, and an oblong pressing block 23 is provided having a handle 24, said block being shaped soI as to fit over the moisture pad 21. By this means stamps and envelope may be conveniently moistened by pressing the block 23 on the top of the envelop which rests with its gummed side on the moisture pad.
Applicants invention contemplates a pair of vertical wells for containing liquid which communicate with each other adjacent to their bottoms, one of said wells communicating with a cup or basin, said well being provided With a mechanism whereby liquid may be gradually supplied to said cup or basin.
Having described the invention I claim l. In a device of the character described, a Well to contain a liquid, a second Well to contain a liquid, a passage Way located adjacent to the lower end of said Wells and connecting the same, a cup, a passage Way connecting said cup With the second Well, and a piston and rod in said second Well for delivering liquid to said cup.
2. In an ink stand of the character described, an ink Well, a stopper closing said ink Well, a second ink Well, a passage Way connecting said ink Wells adjacent to their bottom, a stopper mounted on the top of said second ink Well, and having a central passage Way, and a vertical slot communieating with said passage Way, a piston in said second ink Well, with a rod projecting through said passage Way, and having a laterally bent handle projecting from said slot in said stopper, an ink cup, and a passage Way connecting said ink cup With the top of said second inl; Well.
