To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Trmnnsa E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Itushville, in the county of Sheridan and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracing- Legs for Beds, Couches, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bracing or supporting legs for beds, couches and the like, and my object is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and quickly applied to use in connection with a bed or couch and also readily removed at will.

A further object of the invention resides in providing an improved fastening plate adapted to cooperate with the side rail of the couch or bed, and a further object resides in providing means for normally disposing the leg in its extended position.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a leg which is hinged to the fastening plate, and a still further object resides in providing means for retaining the leg in its inoperative position.

A still further object resides in providing a device which is extremely simple in construction, thereby readily and cheaply manufactured and one which is very ellicient and useful in operation.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a couch or bed showing my improved device applied to use. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of a side rail of a couch or bed showing the leg in its inoperative position, and, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the fastening plate removed from the side rail of the couch.

In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in Which- 1 indicates a bed, couch or the like and 2 indicates a side rail thereof designed angularly, as usual. or supporting leg to the side rail, I provide a fastening plate 3 which is bent upon itself to form the upper and lower faces 41: and 5, respectively, the width of said faces being sul'istantially equal to the width of the upper face 6 of said angular side rail. 2 and the length thereof being entirely optional and in proportion to the size of the couch. I'lingedly secured to one end of the under face 5 of said fastening plate, is a supporting or bracing leg 7 of any desired size and shape, and encircling the pintle ti of the hinge connection between said plate and leg, is a strong coil spring 9. Que end of this coil spring is disposed in engagement with the leg, while the opposite end thereof is engaged with, the under face 5 of said fastening plate, whereby the normal tendency of the same will be to force said leg in its open or extended position, but I have provided means to retain said leg in its inoperative position, which will be hereinafter and more particularly described.

In applying the device to a couch or bed, the fastening plate is so positioned upon the upper face ii of the side rail as to receive the same between the faces 4]: and 5 thereof, and hingedly secured to the side edge of the upper face 4t of said fastenii'ig plate midway of its ends, is a wire spring clip 10, the free end of said clip being bent suliistantially at right angles, as shown at 11,, to the general trend thereof. The length of the spring clip between its hinged end and the angular bent end thereof substantially equal to the height of the side face 12 of said side rail, and when the fastening plate 3 has been properly applied to the upper face of said side rail, the spring clip is swung down to allow the angular bent end 11 thereof to be friction ally forced into engagement with the lower edge of said side face 12. This will securely retain the plate and leg to the side rail of the couch and allow the extreme end of the angular bent portion 11. to project beyond the inner face of the side wall 12, and as the leg 7 is disposed on this side of the wall or face 12, it will be seen that the protruding or projecting free end. of said bent portion 11 may be used to retain the leg in its inoperative or folded position. In order to so fold the leg, it will be necessary, however, to release the spring clip from its engagement with the lower edge of the wall 12 and merely raise the leg 7 whereupon the bent portion 11 may again be engaged with said lower edge. The spring 8 will force said leg against the projecting end of said clip to retain the same in this position, and it will be seen that in this position, the leg will be hidden from view as the wall 12 of the side rail of the couch is disposed on the outside.

This device may be used as a bracing leg for couches, beds, cots and the like when the regular supporting legs thereof have become weakened from use or the same may be used as the ordinary supporting legs for such devices, whereby such furniture may be readily folded and moved from place to place with little or no inconvenience.

I realize that in the manufacture of this device, changes may be made therein, and in this connection, it will be understood that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without sacrificing or departing from the spirit of the invention.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved means for securing a bracing or supporting leg to a couch, bed or the like, through which said leg may be readily applied to use or removed with little or no trouble,whatsoever. It will still further be seen that I have provided a fastening plate adapted to be applied to the side rail of a piece of furniture and a leg hingedly secured to said fastening plate, and it will still further be seen that means for securing said fastening plate to the side rail may also be adapted for use in retaining the leg in its inoperative position. Furthermore, it will be seen that the device is of such simple construction as to be readily and cheaply manufactured, and one which is extremely effective and useful in operation.

lVhat I claim is 1. In a device of the character described,

the combination with a side rail of a couch or the like; of a plate, means to secure the same to said side rail, a leg hinged to one end of said plate, and a spring member cooperating with the hinge of said leg to normally dispose said leg in its operative position at right angles to the side rail.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a side rail of a couch; of aplate detachably secured to said side rail, a leg hinged to one end of said plate, means to normally dispose said leg in its operative position, and means in connection with said plate for retaining said leg in its inoperative position.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a side rail of a couch; of a plate, a leg hinged to one end of said plate, and a spring clip carried on said plate and adapted to engage the side rail to secure the plate thereto.

4. The combination. with a side rail of a couch or the like; of a plate folded in its length to receive a portion of said side rail, a leg hinged to said plate, and a spring clip also carried on said plate adapted to engage another portion of said side rail to removably secure said plate and leg thereto.

5. The combination with an angular side rail of a couch or the like; of a plate folded in its length to receive one face of said angular side rail, a leg hinged to said plate and a spring clip also carried on said plate adapted to engage the lower edge of the opposite face of said side rail to removably secure said plate and leg thereto.
